This was honestly one of the worst films I've ever seen, specifically with respect to the dialogue and editing. There were multiple moments that almost compelled me to leave the theater.

Batman vs Superman was far worse

Everyone I've talked to absolutely hated this movie.

I feel like if it weren't the Ind. Day sequel, but a stand alone film, the reviews would be way worse.

cry thing someone told me. The wait from return of the Jedi to Phantom Menace was 16 years.

That was a steaming pile of shite. This was almost as bad after a 20 year wait and Ghostbusters looks bad too.

Morale. Don't go see a sequel that is more than 10 years after the movie it precedes.

I think they might be a bit better, at least with respect to audience opinion.

A mediocre movie was released in the 90s that so happened to be the first major Hollywood blockbuster disaster film.

In 2016, the sequel is released as a brainless CGI-riddled summer popcorn flick.

Neither movie is great by any objective standard, and both were directed by Roland freaking Emmerich.

Independence Day 1996 was the first major Hollywood big budget disaster film, and pre-911 it was crazy to imagine a major US landmark getting blown up like that. Plus, most of us were kids when that movie was released. The nostalgia people have for the original film is causing people to be way to harsh on the sequel.

I agree with that.

Say goodbye to a third movie. This movie is tanking at the box office right now.

Umm.... no.

There have been Hollywood disaster flicks since at least the 1920s. The 1970s were considered the golden age of disaster movies with very popular flicks like The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, the Airport series, and The Towering Inferno all doing very well at the box office. TTI and the original Airport were even nominated for best picture.

ID4 wasn't even the fist alien invasion disaster flick as movies like War of the Worlds and When Worlds Collide came out in the early 1950s.

Yeah, I was going to post this too. I grew up in the 70's, and it seemed like there was a major disaster movie each year.

Now, if you said first disaster movie since the Star Wars OT that really pushed the FX, and that featured an alien invasion... then maybe.

I do think people are remembering the original a little too fondly, too. The Rock was the big action movie that summer, ID4 was just the sci fi one. I always thought they could have done more with the original, maybe something like Invasion LA or whatever the ground war movie was. If you'd have combined those 2, it really could have been an epic couple of movies.

I haven't seen this one yet, think I might wait on it.

Im about halfway through and this movie is honestly one of the worst I've seen in recent years. I'm barely able to suffer through this. I'm basically hate watching it at this point. I can't look away. It's not even okay as a big dumb action movie.

I will now pencil this movie in.

I recently saw Suicide Squad. Is this movie worse than that one?

Notable Movies with sequels that came out more than 10 years after it's last installment (in order of biggest gaps):
Toy Story 3 (10 years)
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (10 years from Episode 3, 32 years from Episode VI)
Son of The Mask
The Boondock Saints II
Monsters University
Clerks II
Texas Chainsaw Massacre II
Live Free or Die Hard (12 years)
Barbershop: The Next Cut
Bad Santa 2
Finding Dory
The Rescuers Down Under
Jurassic World (14 years)
Zoolander 2
Prometheus
Escape from LA
Godfather Part III
Rocky Balboa
Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace
Blues Brothers 2000
Vacation
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Dumb and Dumber To
Land of the Dead
Independence Day: Resurgence
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps
Psycho II
Tron: Legacy
Mad Max: Fury Road (~30 years)
Jungle Book 2
Return to Oz (45 years)
Return to Never Land (49 years)
Fantasia 2000 (59 years)

Most of them were worse than it's predecessor. In fact, I'd say only TFA, Toy Story 3, Mad Max, and Rocky Balboa were better than it's predecessor after a 10 year gap.

It wasn't THAT bad.

I mean, it's bad, but if you liked the first it's worth a watch.

Editing was shoddy and Hiller stunk. I could do without the Godzilla Queen, but I dug the Probe-thing.

Much of the movie felt forced too. I've seen way worse.
