In the Matrix, are the humans used as batteries or as data storage?

I was watching some thing talking about the Matrix and it did that originally the idea was for the machines to be using the humans as a giant networking device to run their programs, the Matrix. Basically giant hard drives using the unused parts of the brain.

Yet in the movie they say that humans are a power source.

We would be a weak power source but a good data server. Seems like this one change makes the machines entire operation make more sense.

What do y'all think?

Bakeries? I mean, I’ve eaten a good cookie or two but what use is that to machines?

Within the movies it was always batteries. They even talk about how much electricity and btu the human bodies generate.

The matrix was never more than a construct to occupy the human mind for 70 or 80 years to keep humans placid but still keep synapses firing.

The whole we only use 10% of our brain is bullshite anyway. We really don’t have unused parts of our brain.

The thing is it’s always been a stupid idea.

It’s simple thermodynamics. Humans aren’t a source of energy. The “bio electricity” and BTUs meationed are both derived from outside energy sources.

While you can argue that maybe the body can convert that energy with something usable more efficiently, it wouldn’t be efficient enough to overcome “losses” used to keep the body alive.

Even if there was a marginal net positive, it’s nothing that a few extra fusion reactors couldn’t replace.

QFT. The human brains sucks up a tremendous amount of energy, if most of it wasn't getting used we'd have much smaller brains.

The battery thing was always... well it was a neat idea that has zero value. Even if the surface of the Earth was nuked into oblivion and solar power was now useless the machines would be fine. Geothermal and nuclear would provide more than enough power thank you very much. Not to mention that in the time frame the Matrix is talking about the fallout would have settled and the machines could start deploying solar power and wind turbine units where ever they wanted.

Simple assumption that one gains from the misdirection in the movies where it discusses "bio electricity" and "BTU".

The truth of the Matrix is that human emotions and their souls are the power source. The squid-like robots have blocked out "the sun", i.e. the son Jesus, God, Ra, whatever you want to call it. Neo's power is ultimately derived not from kung fu or guns but from inner calmness and self-determination, which are concepts evident in the teachings of Jesus, the Buddha, etc. Neo's powers evolve as he goes from a loner disconnected from the world and disaffected by a job he hates to finding love and a cause to fight for.

The end.

First major strike in what is described in Fight Club:

quote:

“We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.”

One thing I don't understand. The sky was scarred, the Earth was jacked up, yet here is this superintelligent race of AI beings sticking around trying to use humans for batteries. Would this AI not have advanced enough in 200 years to have just said the heck with it and headed out into space?

Thinking about it, that could be used as a nice twist if they worked it right.

If their needs were met, what motive would they have for "adventure"? The impetus for living beings' desire to conquer new worlds has always been resource driven.

The sun aspect wasn't fallout, some shite called Nanites that blocked out the sun and are continuing to block out the sun in perpetuity. The other energy sources you mentioned, for sure, but they never figured out how to remove the nanites. It's why humans live near the Earth's core, where it's still warm.

Motive would be better, easier power source than messing around with stupid humans.

They've got manipulating humans down to a science so much that they even create "savior" narratives for some of them like Neo. They are non-living beings that if they do reproduce at the very least have a recycling process so that their needs and numbers stay stable and predictable. I just don't see them leaving the place.

If you go with the spiritual theme, the robots are daemon/demons/angels that are bound as much to the "real world" as the humans are to the matrix.

With mining its warm a mile down. I mean oh my God I'm dying warm. Mines tend to be extremely shallow, in relation to the Earth's core, but yeah, I get what you mean. I do not say this to disagree with you.

I still think it is fairly bogus, and if it did block out solar it wouldn't do anything to wind power which, if you removed humanity, could cover a huge amount of the planet. I think they tried to get a bit too cutesy on this but it worked because... who really thinks about how energy is generated?

Coal, for example, is on the outs now because it isn't great for the environment. But for a machine "empire" why would they care? Build all the coal plants you can.

I am overthinking this.

Now... a Matrix society where AI took over but was bound by its programming to keep humanity alive would make total sense. "We could do this so much more efficiently but we have to preserve humanity." That is humanity as a zoo species. That is horrifying. "You keep rebelling so we have to keep developing new scenarios for you to live in. We just want you to thrive."

Oh yeah, for sure. I was quoting a line from the original movie. Tank tells neo that Zion is the last human city and it's located deep underground, near the earth's core, where it's still warm.

They'd hardly call them CopperTops if they were being consumed for food.

I mean sure, but what sci-fi movie doesn't have a ton of unbelievable elements?

Empire's Top 5 Sci-Fi movies of all time:

1. Blade Runner: 2019 Los Angeles is equipped with flying cards and humanoid sentient androids who navigate the stars in an effort to live past their expiration date.

2. Alien: A breed of alien creatures created to annihilate all mankind because the dudes that made man think we're all dicks. The aliens are also organically created, yet spit a vemon that can not only eat through any organic material, but can also go clean through the hull of a metal ship.

3. Star Wars: Ancient space wizards from another galaxy fight off evil ancient space wizards who want to dominate the galaxy. These space wizards are immune to the vacuum of space and literally disappear when they are killed, so long as they're cool. Also Lightsabers are physically impossible and lazers shoot at the speed of light.

4. The Matrix: We've gone over this

5. 2001: A Space Odyssey: Aliens from a distant planet put a big metal object on earth that turns chimps into people. They also put one on the moon in an effort to turn man into a floating fetus that watches over Earth.

I love all five of them, but they've all got their silly elements. When watching Science Fiction, you have to suspend you disbelief
