I wish they had gone for an angle that we make for processing power. Neural networks are modelled after our neurons but are severely lacking in efficiency compared to the human brain. Could have had an angle where they use the human brain for processing power to help enhance their own AI. Data storage could have been believable as well over being a battery.
The human battery thing is really stupid. Just burn whatever you are feeding the humans and you'd have a more efficient usage of energy. Keeping the human alive is a needless waste of resources, especially because Morpheus mentions they have nuclear fusion invented in universe.

The original story was that human brains are being used as a giant neural network for processing power. This makes alot more sense with other elements of the story - being able to use your mind to change the program, dying if you're not properly disconnected etc.
Apparently the Warner Bros suits thought this was too high level for the computer illiterate audiences of the 90's to understand and forced the change to human batteries.

A human would make a terrible battery. We generate less power than we take in (calorie wise). Horrible efficiency in converting fuel to energy.
