One of the biggest negatives of the marvel machine, regardless of whether you like the movies or not, is that they have taken a considerable amount of prime away from some of the best actors and directors of this generation and the last.

This is especially the case to Downey, who, according to many inside the industry, is the best actor working today, but he spent 15 yrs tied up playing Tony Stark and making hundreds of millions doing it.

RDJ can play anything. He should have multiple Oscars by now, but he doesn't. It's a shame. The guy is a meteoric talent

He also spent about 10 years or so between Chaplin and Iron Man to where he was a punchline for substance abuse.

Great actor but was unreliable as hell at that time, as he would constantly piss dirty and end up off of movies or shows he was doing as a result regardless of the quality of his performances.

He was Charlie Sheen, before Charlie Sheen, with all of the jokes, but minus the sex and porn stars.

I never saw "Chaplin" until the last year or so but after watching a documentary on Charlie Chaplin and seeing more of what he was like, RDJs performance in that movie is absolutely astonishing
Heart and Souls 1993 IMDb is another movie that really shows off his acting chops.

Who? Evans? Helmsworth? Those are the only ones that could be said might be typecast by their association with Captain America or Thor. None of the other MCU actors are that closely tied with their character. And it's not like either one of those two are going to get confused with Laurence Olivier.

Yeah it's nonsense. The MCU didn't rob the world of anyone's "prime."

He killed it in Air America. Not sure how high he was during that one but I’m assuming pretty high since it was about drug smuggling.

Iron Man saved RDJ's career. Without that film, would we be seeing him today at all?

True but that’s only one person. The rest of the actors swallowed up by it didn’t have his demons. So we traded an RDJ Renaissance possibly for the loss of more unique and dramatic roles in other actors.

I watched Ca$h with Sean Bean and Chris Hemsworth (really watched it for Bean). I also saw Star Trek (again, Hemsworth in it). These were in 2009 and 2010. Nothing I saw suggested Hemsworth would be a draw, or even land a leading role. Then came Thor in 2011, and the MCU... and dude's a superstar.

I vaguely remember Chris Evans from Fantastic Four, but he didn't really jump off the screen, not to me. Again, his life took an enormous leap forward starting in 2011 with Captain America.

Chris Pratt did a good job in Zero Dark Thirty, but otherwise was a TV actor. Since he joined the MCU as Starlord, his career exploded, and now he can make whatever movies and shows he wants.

The MCU has basically run it's course, but it didn't ruin those guys' careers, it made them.

Downey is very talented. He was very good in the Charlie Chaplin biopic years ago.

I liked RDJ as the reporter in Natural Born Killers and as the big city lawyer defending his judge dad played by Robert Duvall in The Judge.

It’s not a blanket statement but it holds some merit (at least regarding actors/actresses).

His wife plays a very important part in all of this. I just worked with both of them on the sympathizer and he is a class human being and of course an incredible talent (plays 5 characters on the project)

It does not hold any merit. There’s no reason to believe they’d have been in better movies outside of the MCU, and most of the decent MCU actors/actresses have done plenty of other projects in the meantime.

Just saw Oppenheimer and he was absolutely outstanding. Besides Murphy, he gave by far and away the best performance.

Truth. Downey's career was basically over, until he did Iron Man. Doing multiple films on schedule, with a big budget, proved he had his act together and could be trusted, as well as showcased his talent.

It launched the Chris's to stardom; Hemsworth was going to be a bit/character actor. Evans was bouncing around. Pratt failed to launch with ZDT, and was doing TV.

It also launched Haley Atwell's and Tom Hiddleston's career, Tom Holland's career, and doesn't seem to have interfered with Zoe Saldana's, Josh Brolin's, Scarlett Johanssen's, Jeremy Renner's, or Brie Larson's.
Samuel Jackson might not be as active, but he's also 74 yr old. You can go down the list with other actors...

There's a lot of complaints about the MCU related to saturation, but it was successful in large part because it DID have good acting.

Downey credits Mel Gibson for getting him through it. From an awards speech in 2011

quote:

“When I couldn’t get sober, he told me not to give up hope and he urged me to find my faith. It didn’t have to be his or anyone else’s as long as it was rooted in forgiveness. And I couldn’t get hired, so he cast me in the lead of a movie that was actually developed for him and he kept a roof over my head, and he kept food on the table.”
