Gladiator is a top notch popcorn movie. Never should've been nominated. It's entertaining, but honestly it's just not Best Picture material.
Hurt Locker was excellent and deserved at least a nomination.
Titanic deserved to win Best Picture. If you don't understand why, I can assume you have a low movie IQ.
Dances with Wolves deserved to win Best Picture.
Crash deserved a nomination.

my all time favorite movie. yeah I said it
Can't say that - as it is not even my favorite Ridley picture (which would be Bladerunner).
However, it is not overrated - easily best picture that year - candidate for best picture of the 90s for me - up there with Pulp Fiction and Shawshank.

The Academy would likely go with "Wolves" as it fits their narrative. And it was a great film.

The Hurt Locker
Crash
Dances With Wolves
Titanic
A Beautiful Mind
Gladiator
Shakespeare in Love
Million Dollar Baby
Slumdog Millionaire
Of that list, the following number of awards were won:
The Hurt Locker - 6 Oscar wins
Crash - 3 Oscar wins
Dances with Wolves - 7 Oscar wins
Titanic - 11 Oscar wins
A Beautiful Mind - 4 Oscar wins
Gladiator - 5 Oscar wins
Shakespeare in Love - 7 Oscar wins
Million Dollar Baby - 4 Oscar wins
Slumdog Millionaire - 8 Oscar wins
The year Titanic came out, 1997, was a strong year for motion pictures. Good Will Hunting, Titanic, As Good as it Gets, L.A. Confidential and The Full Monty. That was one of the strongest Best Picture line ups we have seen in many years. Despite the strong line up, Titanic swept the Oscars that year, winning in 11 of the 14 categories it was nominated in. The Oscars don't do that unless they really like you.
In fact, Titanic is also part of a club that includes Ben-Hur and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Those are the only three films to win 11 Oscars. No other film has won more.
Of the films listed, Titanic would win Best Picture hands down.

Traffic and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were more deserving IMO.
Gladiator was a summer popcorn flick that happened to be released in a weak year for film.

Million Dollar Baby and Crash are the weakest of the bunch.
I have never seen Dances with Wolves
Titanic won because they wanted Cameron to have an Oscar. Hurt Locker won for the opposite reason.
So for me it comes down to Shakespeare in Love, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind and Slumdog Millionaire. I think Slumdog would win.

Titanic would win and it's not even close.
How many of those movies have made the big screen twice?

Agree. Gladiator = Die Hard in a coliseum

if thats the case then we need to add Anchorman 2 to the list

2000 was pretty fantastic. Out of the nominees, probably CTHD or Traffic, as RollTide said (we agree!), but if you look at the rest of the year:
Memento
Almost Famous
In the Mood for Love
O Brother
American Psycho
George Washington
Wonder Boys
Shadow of the Vampire
Requiem for a Dream
There are probably at least 10 films I would put above Gladiator, even though it's a glossy, well produced film worthy of limited praise.

Meh I would put this year, 2010, 2009, 2008, 99 and 94 and maybe some other recent ones ahead of 1997

I wouldn't. Anything post-2008 I don't count because they increased the number of potential nominees from 5 to 10. I would also rank 2008 below 1997 because the most significant and critically acclaimed film of the year wasn't even nominated for Best Picture.
