It definitely had better elements that I personally enjoy more out of a movie. This is a separate topic than what the thread is about, but I don't like Titanic at all. It's a trite love story told in an uninteresting way, and it stretches on forever.

'dances' is overrated imo, though still a good film ... what would win and what the best film is are two different questions ... 'titanic' would probably win, and while it's a great movie, i think 'a beautiful mind' is better ...

Other than the script and acting, Titanic has it beat in the categories of directing, music, editing, cinematography and production design.

It's a much better produced and executed film.

LA confidential is a much better film and beats Titanic in almost very category.

I wouldn't. Anything post-2008 I don't count because they increased the number of potential nominees from 5 to 10. I would also rank 2008 below 1997 because the most significant and critically acclaimed film of the year wasn't even nominated for Best Picture.
