What was the buildup?
Like I said, it's been a while since I've seen it but I recall the filmmakers using the cinematography, score, and scenery to build the relationship between the two. There certainly was some dialogue, but I recall it taking somewhat of a backseat. I'll need to watch it again to confirm my memory though.

I wasn't going to bring it up because it is obvious that the people bashing the movie don't know this.

The English Patient and Shakespeare in Love say hello.

It probably was best picture that year and def should have won over Crash. I don't recall the other nominees though.
I looked it up and it was up against Munich, Good night and good luck, and Capote. Capote was my favorite of those movies that year.
some other notable movies of that year were walk the line, memoirs of a geisha, batman begins, and

fake macho posturing, them becoming closer and closer, becoming more isolated, catching glances, etc
Then they get fricking hammered on whiskey and throw all their caution to the wind

You watch Brokeback Mountain and masturbate a few times to it and now all of a sudden you’re gay

And crash. Woof. Walk the line should have been nominated at least I would guess but it's been awhile.
Of all those films, I don't know that I would call Brokeback Mountain my favorite but it's by far the most memorable and best of that group.

It's a great movie all around. The acting, the story, the filming, and the soundtrack all come together beautifully. It felt pretty powerful to me to me when Heath Ledger's character hugs that shirt at the end. I think that showing of grief crosses all lines of sexuality, and relationships both romantic and platonic.
Of course the gay aspect adds weight. It leads to ruined marriages, lost jobs, and creates a sense of unattainable happiness.
Great movie, and anyone that doesn't like it can go get buttfricked in a tent.

Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Good Night, And Good Luck
Munich
All of them would have been a better choice than Crash.

Not a bad movie. I thought it was incredibly depressing at the end

Your spot on here. I watched it for the first time today. 20 years after its release. Its based off a short book, adapted by Larry McMurty, the same writer that did the Lonesome Dove series. Its essentialty Gus and the Cournal were in love, set in the 60s.
This movie is a masterpiece though, the filming, the shots, the acting and the soundtrack. It blows away anything made today. The Characters are all well written and the pain they carry from the complexities of their relationships, is so transparent onto the film, you cant help but feel for them.
Its essentiality a love story set in the 60s, between 2 souls in Texas.
Great movie.
