re: I still can’t believe how bad the Disney Star Wars sequel trilogy was

The Last Jedi just completely ruins it for me. One of the worst lines in cinema…..
“That’s how we’re going to win. Not fighting what we hate. But saving what we love!”
IMO if they had literally just cut out the Rose character altogether, a LOT of people would have loved that movie and forgiven a lot of the other faults.
Even the horse race-animal thing and the orphans side plots would've still been stupid, but more digestible.

I have definitely come to the conclusion that Star Wars was way overrated, and I hate telling my inner child that. Looking back, it’s pretty absurd people argued if Star Wars or Lord of the Rings is better, because maybe outside of the villains and tying with special effects and the orchestral score, LotR obviously has it beat across the board.
I don't think the OG SW films are overrated really. But I also recognize that they aren't overly "good" movies. And by that I mean they are silly/fun, the acting is pretty bad, some of it doesn't make sense, etc. But they were fun as frick and hit the world at the perfect time.
Sure, nostalgia props them up a good bit, but they are still very entertaining movies. And at the end of the day, that's the most important part of a movie IMO.
So I don't think comparing SW to LotR is unfair at all, and I think solid arguments can be made for both. And SW hits me in the nostalgic feels way more than LotR does (I have LotR as my #1 trilogy of all time, btw).
But having a fice year old boy, I've watched more SW in the last few years than I ever did. And the writing and acting is just flat out bad at times. Like laughably bad. But at the same time, the "magic" of those movies still resonates in kids nowadays. It was awesome watching my boy light up when certain scenes came on or certain things happened. shite, for a while there he thought the opening scroll music was just about the coolest thing imaginable. And he loves LotR too, but it didn't hit him in the same way or with the same wonder as the SW movies did. There's something to that IMO.

Yes, Rose was a poor character but i also think they wanted to add marvel type of humor to it. And it was handled poorly. I remember getting concerned when Poe started doing your mom jokes with Hux. That was just an awful scene.

Take Rose and Holdo out, and the quality jumps significantly. Let Ackbar take the suicide run instead. Would have really tied a bow on his arc.

One of the worst things to happen to big market type movies was the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. After that was so successful other movies tried to shoehorn that flavor of comedy into every scene and it just didn't work.
I know Thor Ragnarok is fairly beloved on this board, but one reason I didn't like it was that it tried SO HARD to be funny and drop sarcastically funny lines, and it just fell flat for me and it felt so disingenuous. It would've been better had they just tried to have organically funny stuff in it IMO.

Hot take:
It isn't near as bad as everyone says it is.
It's nowhere near as great as it could have and should have been, obviously. But having rewatched them in recent years, outside of some obvious things they really aren't too bad of movies. They are entertaining enough for me.
ETA: Fingers crossed that this isn't the argument Corinthians is also making in the thread.
haha i love you bro, and i almost always agree with your opinions, but hard disagree here. TLJ and ROS are both absolute nonsensical dogshit.
aside from some cool visuals and decent fights, they are hot garbage. not unlike Aggie football.

Last jedi ending was just so bad that it tanked everyone's thoughts on the entire film honestly.
It was awful.

I think had they let Finn sacrifice himself, he could've been a top-five SW character of all time. But they blew it and let Rose save him (while simultaneously fricking over the entire resistance) and it was just fricking stupid. But a stormtrooper who turned and converted to the resistance side is about as awesome of story as can be found in the SW universe.

i think there was a collective "oh no..oh no no no" across Star Wars fandom at that exact moment.

I wish Finn were the central character in the trilogy, personally.
Stormie turned rebel after an epiphany was just really interesting.
Instead they made him a comic relief simp.

I've watched that one more than most over the last several years. And it's just plain not that bad.
I get peoples' gripes with it, but they didn't bother me as much. Like people flipped out about Luke drinking the weird animal milk and tossing his lightsaber. Well, that didn't bother me since he was basically tired of being a Jedi and didn't want to deal with that shite anymore. And he lives on an island in the middle of Planet Bumfrick Nowhere, so him drinking the milk makes enough sense to me (even though it would've been better had it not been in there at all...I assume it was done for some sort of comedic effect, who knows).
But I watched it and was like man, this really isn't as bad as I remember it being or as I remember everyone flipping out about. It's really not that bad. Sure, it's in mid-to-low tier SW movies, but it was still entertaining for me.
ETA: the worst part about TLJ is that it turned people off from SW, so they didn't go see Solo, which was pretty awesome.

I liked the concept of Finn, but did not enjoy Boyega nor where they took his character. Even in TFA it was way too rushed. Overall execution for what that character could be was done so poorly.

Imagine Ackbar doing the, admittedly dumb, suicide warp attack at the end.
Right before he does it, he hails the First Order Command Ship and says, "Gentlemen, this was a trap!"
So damned poetic, man
