Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Even those without taste or ability to recognize a truly interesting narrative and observation about faith.

It wasn't scary, it was ominous and deeply disturbing.
I think the review that said it feels like something you shouldn't be watching nailed it.

shite sucked. I watched it last night based on a thread on here and it sucked.

I thought it was awful. The only thing keeping me & my wife in our seats the whole time was that we didn't want to be the short-sighted assholes who left before the Holy-shite-ZOMG ending in the last 17 seconds of the film.
That ending never happened.

Pretty much this.

What? That faith is stupid and causes people to act irrationally about things that are not real? You are acting like this was a documentary. It actually would have been far more suspenseful and interesting if they had done it realistically and they didn't have an actual witch or devil and just let it be about how religious superstition and paranoia can lead to horrible acts of violence like it actually did back then with "witch scares".

Yes, in the style of horror. That doesn't mean they are comparable in quality at all. Not a difficult concept.
I never said you were comparing quality, but even the style was way off. Kubric knows suspense and how to build dread. The Witch did none of that. In the Shining, you really didn't know until the very end if it was the actual hotel or if it was just cabin fever. The picture on the wall at the end that contained Mr Torrence revealed the truth about the hotel. It captured souls. We knew from the first 5 minutes that there was a "witch" in The Witch.
To each their own opinion though. If you enjoyed the film, great. I didn't. I didn't find anything suspenseful or creepy about it and was very disappointed. The only really cool part of it was when Black Phillip actually talked. The phrase "would'st thou like to live deliciously" was actually kind of cool, but other than that, it was a snore fest.

Incisive. I never really thought about it that way. Damn.

I'm sorry I'm not as knowledgeable or literate when it comes to movies as you clearly are. Perhaps I should just watch infomercials.

I loved it. And appreciated it even more after watching The Conjuring 2. It was a truly original experience.

Dude, seriously? Watch what you enjoy. There isn't a movie out there I would tell someone to avoid seeing at least once. We don't have to like the same things or take away the same experience from a movie. Trust me, there are some movies that I love that most people think are stupid as frick. (UHF comes to mind. I love that movie but most people hate it). That being said, I would never compare a movie like UHF to something like The Lord of the Rings. There is no comparison. LotR is a far better movie, but if I'm in the mood for some cheesy arse goofy comedy, I'm going with UHF. "Uh-oh. Heh Heh, it looks like Bobbo's been eating YAPPY'S DOG TREATS!"

Yet you are comparing the quality. The way The Shining tried to be scary is the same way The Witch tried to. It wasn't cheap jump scares or gore, It was building suspense, ominous tones and disturbing innuendo, and general WTF moments. You are perfectly entitled to not like it as much, I don't think they are even close, but to say they are not the same style of horror is just not accurate. We knew early on there was some hag in the woods, probably a witch. However the point of the movie was not whether or not there was a Witch. Early on in the Shining we know a lot about the hotel, but that isn't the point of the movie.

This is a movie that needed to be more graphic.
Not everyone loves gore porn. I believe the franchise you're looking for is Saw
Posted on 6/14/16 at 12:32 am to mizzoukills
Yeah. Needed more jump scares, a cgi ghost and an exorcism thrown in for good measure.

It's kind of like a David Lynch film set in the fifteenth century. They did the Puritans very accurately and I love this film but I can see how it would turn others off. And creepy not scary because it's a 'psychological' horror film which is my favorite kind. It's not gore porn like so many modern horror films and I thought it had a strong story of 4 people going mad and losing their faith, while the devil covertly pulls the strings.

I tried to watch it twice when I rented it.
I fell asleep both times.
It was extremely slow.
AND I say that even though I can sit and watch the slowest of movies

Well I wish I could sit and defend my opinion a little better but I just couldn't make it through the first 30 minutes without my eyes closing.
Maybe it picks up and I don't know.
