How much do you guys lean on IMDB before bothering to watch something

Just wondering if this is a quirk, or pretty common. It’s been a primary reason I commit to renting something on Prime. And irritates me to know end that Netflix doesn’t use it. Seems like they use to?
There’s some geeky formula my brain concocted where depending on who’s in it I won’t dip below 4.7 - 4.8. If I barely recognize a few of the actors it’s usually mid 6s and up. And I almost disregard for series because they seem to rate them all so high. But 7-8 will at least have me check out the trailer once or twice
Is this a boneheaded approach? Are there tons of sub 4 shite out there im missing out on

Can’t think of the last time I fired up IMDB
Usually I can just tell if a recent movie is gonna be pure slop so I let my intuition make the choice

I visit IMDB from time to time, but I stopped going there on the reg when they removed the message boards from the site.

Not in my experience. 5-6 seems like a decent cutoff, but I think bot spam and paid reviews (corporate or otherwise) have too much pull there. That, or a lot of people have a low bar for what they give a 10.

I mostly hit up imdb when my eyes recognize an actor/actress but I can't recall from what movie/show.
But I do on occasion review pocorn ratings and critic ratings when there is a movie with a great cast that I dont know. Or newer movie that I maybe had an ounce of interest at release and now have an evening to burn on something new

I use IMDB for exactly 2 things.
1.Looking up whatever show or movie I'm watching to check the cast to see where else I've seen a particular actor or actor/actress before
2. Reading the trivia section of movies or shows that I liked

Exactly zero times ever.
I can usually tell if I will like or hate something, and am usually pretty accurate. But there are some misses (MacGruber is a good example; thought I’d hate it and then eventually finally watched it and loved it).
I use this board far more than any other site that has ratings of movies and TV.

I won’t watch a movie below a 6.2 or show below 7.5

I usually do a quick search on Rotten Tomatoes. If the Critics love it, but the general audience hates it, I avoid it. If both rate it highly, then you are golden.
Not enough time available to spend any of it watching crap. Seems like years ago Netflix used to show you viewer ratings, but they took it off.

The only value imdb had was their message boards.
Having a dedicated message board for every single movie and actor in existence was extremely useful and interesting.
They shut it down because they didn't want to moderate it anymore.

They (Amazon) probably didn’t want to provide a platform where people can criticize the products they’re attempting to sell.

It used to be a better honest evaluation of movie quality but seems to have been hijacked.
So, to answer the question: more than 10 years ago? A few times a year. Within the last seven years? Almost never

I use it to look up casting but I don’t give much credence to the ratings.
If I want to watch something, I watch it. I probably do more word of mouth suggestions for new stuff (usually someone has watched it here).

Almost every time. Unless it’s a new season of a series that I’ve already been watching.

There's a lot of truth to this as well. The same reason why Netflix removed ratings and YouTube removed the thumbs down.
Any platform where people want to honestly discuss the pros and cons of anything is seen as dangerous they want to control the narrative

I use it all the time to figure out where I know an actor/actress from….

You can still rate movies and post reviews...

It's never been an "honest evaluation" of movie quality because it's always been a weighted average of ratings from random internet users. Such users have always been too reactionary with both 10s and 1s.
It has not been hijacked. It has remained very popular with young users and the specific non-young people who rate movies like young users, and it has become more and more popular in South Asia, as you can see with how high recent bollywood movies score.
It is useful for looking at cast and crew info, and that's about it. I don't even notice the number score anymore when I'm on a movie's page.

Not since last December. My go-to is Reelgood instead, but IMDB I used for their top 100 or 200 Christmas movies list to get ideas what to watch, and maybe there was a top 1,000 list all-time for curiosity.
