How much better would Bram Stoker’s Dracula be regarded if they had a more appropriate

Jonathan harker character? Seriously lessens every scene he is in.
I like Keanu as much as the next person but that was horrible casting
It’s still an amazing movie though

How is the character different in the book?

Not a surfer playing dress up?

While not my favorite Dracula movie, this particular version is the closest adaptation of the book.

That’s crazy talk. Not only is it the best Dracula movie, it may just be in my top 10 overall movies. The uniqueness of the cinematography sets it apart from some stupid vampire action movie. Gary Oldman is phenomenal.
And while I will concede that SOME actors in the movie feel a bit out of place, I am incapable of saying anything negative about Keanu Reeves.

Hey, I did a Winona Ryder Dracula babe thread like a year ago! I’m the original

If they had case Ralph Fiennes for Harker, it would have been perfect.

I love Keanu, his acting has come a long way.
I think that’s a good way to phrase it. He used to be pretty wooden IMO.

Much better. He was horrible in it. Horrible.

While Keanu was just wrong for the part across the board, I think he was too worried about the accent and Francis couldn't/wouldn't get him some help on the rest of the performance. I mean, you had Sir Anthony and GO, both of whom can act with anyone. Truth be told, Wynona wasn't fantastic in it either, and also had accent problems, but it pales to Keanu.
Better casting (let's face it - Brits) of the leads would likely have elevated this film significantly.

Keanu Reeves portrayed a Brit in "Dracula" about as accurately as John Wayne portrayed Genghis Khan in "The Conqueror".
Both were badly miscast and laughable in their roles.

I seem to recall that Coppola wanted Johnny Depp for Harker but got over ruled by the studio.

No. Not even close. The book does not contain a romance story between Dracula and Mina, and Mina certainly does not kill Dracula.
It's a very good take, but it's not the closest to the book.

I think that movie is pretty good.

Honestly, Elizabeth Hurley seems like a slam-dunk. She was 27 at the time, obviously beautiful enough for the role as object of obsession. And, of course, Brit.

This, but Coppola stole the whole reincarnation idea from Dan Curtis' 1974 version starring Jack Palance as Dracula. In that film it's Lucy who Dracula falls in love with because she is the reincarnation of his dead wife. It also was the first Dracula movie to suggest that Dracula and Vlad the Impaler were one and the same. If you haven't seen it, you should give it a watch. It's criminally underrated and Palance is actually an excellent Dracula, both tragic and terrifying at the same time.

I did not say that this movie followed the book, I said that it was the closest to the book because all of the movies that I know of change something from the original book. It is the only movie that I know of that has the character of Quincy, who is in the book. This movie also mentions the gypsies, who are rarely mentioned in other movies.

I liked this movies, but it is so over-the-top Hollywood, I rank this 3rd best, behind the 1981 Frank Langella version and Werner Herzog's great Nosferatu The Vampyre.
