How long will it take to have a show on the level of Breaking Bad/The Wire etc?

It seems clear that there has been a significant disinvestment into captivating big budget storytelling on TV lately. Also if it happens, will it be from the networks or streaming? When was the last time a major network was willing to shell out the big bucks on a show, Lost?

We have had some attempts that had good starts from Netflix such as Ozark and House of Cards, but lack of direction and they just could not finish it. There was a lot of buzz initially with Rings of Power and we all know how poorly that was done. HBO seems like a mess these days. It's hard for me to visualize them not failing hard even with the Harry Potter series they are developing.

Amazon and Apple seem to be the only hope, but Amazon seems to like to try to force shows and burn cash so that leaves Apple. Apple shows have consistently high production quality, it is just a matter of time before they have a show on that level.

I hadn't really thought about it, but there has been a dry spell of appointment series in the last few years

It's difficult to produce a show with that quality due to the intersection of budget and popularity.

I think other shows have interesting premises without an overall story and the showrunners can't finish it (Ozark).

How people remember/cherish Game of Thrones shows you that the bam bam pow pow stuff (seasons 5-7, when it got SUPER popular) is what the general population wants (as opposed to the superior seasons 1-4). You just can't go full retard with it.

I think having so many different streaming services makes it tough. A lot of people have Netflix and Hulu but miss out on apple or hbo shows

That's a hotter take than me calling The Americans "the best show on TV" while BB was still on TV

so many layers

Breaking Bad relied on a lot of wham pow/explosion elements at the end. People forget because it was one of the first premium level TV shows and it was a minor cultural phenomenon

I don't disagree. Why I thought the Americans was better in real time and BCS was better within the universe

Vince Gilligan has an untitled Apple TV+ series in production so maybe when that one comes out?

Watch Homicide: Life on the Streets. It’s on peacock. Closest thing you’ll get until something new comes along.
