But the show doesnt really show him being famous.

It freezes him in time - the time before the show got to be the hugest thing on television. The failed pilot kind of pretends the show's real world success never happened.

So, he was kind of famous before the show hit. That is how his character is in the show.

He’s in demand outside of New York so he does have a broad national appeal. He made references to just coming in from doing shows in places like Houston. And then there’s the episode with him and his annoying manager traveling to/from a show far from New York.

He's probably "Colin Quinn/Dave Attell" level famous- a regular on talk shows, known for a few things, but not famous enough to live in a nice apartment or be stupid rich.

When he was arrested in Latham, Massachusetts, he wasn't the headline. They were called the New York 4.

Must not have been that big of a celebrity. Basically him before the show aired.

He was really big in Japan based on his appearance on "The Super Terrific Happy Hour" and still received royalty checks from the Japanese

I'd have to think hard but off the top of my head I don't really recall him ever taking a proper "vacation" aside from visiting his parents in florida.

What are you talking about? He had a villa in Tuscany right by The Maestro!

Also, he dates women way out of his league if we are just going off looks and personality

This always bothered me.

Just Jerry Seinfeld hubris. He wrote super hot chicks into the show. He was famous for the show, ergo getting hot chicks.

But he was not famous in the show. Ergo, people question his ability to buy a Cadillac for his Dad.

And he lives in a tiny apartment where a fricking mailman can afford to live.

Jerry wasn't rich at all. And nobody really knows about him...his great write up years later in the show is for a school newspaper...and she thinks Jerry is gay...not that there's anything wrong with that.

The show starts always in a tiny stand-up room and that was Jerry...and probably most of his life before the show.

But Jerry getting the super hot chicks was the person Jerry probably casting them out of bravado even though it was fictional.

He IRL girlfriend at the time wasn't nearly as hot as the babes on the show.

Its not a documentary or a biography just because the show is named after him. He essentially plays a caricature of himself before he got his big break with Caron. They never mention his Carson Letterman gigs and its only later in the show when he gets a break with t.v. It would be like recognizing Todd Barry or someonoe on the New York streets.

The anomaly wasn’t Jerry having a very nice small apartment in New York. The anomaly was Kramer and Newman having similar apartments.

Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld knew it helped boost the show to have super hot chicks, especially when they're real and fantastic.

Even George (bald and jobless) didn't swing around his league until maybe Susan (and they realized she was a disaster that nobody liked.

But Jerry and George are living in fantasy worlds in who they can get for their SO.

I think they point this out in wink-wink making fun of this when Jerry dates a hot chick that's really cool and it turns out Newman dated her also.

It's the show saying...we're playing with the fact that Jerry is some catch for girls.

No. He’s a known celebrity on the show, makes enough money to stun Elaine with a paycheck, and he mentions being on Leno and Letterman in a manner of fact method. There’s no “Oh my God I’m going to be on Carson/Leno moment. He’d just casually mention that he was flying out to do Leno.

It’s confusing because they had him home so much. But other than his not having the Benson gig, it’s pre-Seinfeld-Chronicles Jerry.

The apartment rent for the actual building portrayed in the show is around $1800 IRL.

Famous enough that Letterman called him, but he called him by the wrong name.

In terms of people not recognizing him. This is also pre internet. Unless you were someone who went to comedy clubs or religiously watched the late night shows, why would you recognize him? No twitter, no instagram, no you tube clips that go viral, no Netflix special, etc.

Celebs, even minor ones, are way more visible now.
