Second, let's say they never made this move or Viserys decided as a big boy to marry Laena. Let's say they have a son. We would be in the same position, except it would probably be worse because House Velaryon is more powerful than Hightower. Corlys has been looking for any way to right the wrong on Rhaenys (whether she wants it or not). What better way than to make the move to put her grandson on the iron throne. It would also be more lopsided due to Rhaenys, Laena, and Laenor having dragons while Daemon would likely be on Rhaenyra's side since he would have never married Laena.

If Rhaenyra is still married to Laenor, how is this a problem? Corlys said in this past episode, names are remembered not blood.

Yep, in an alternative scenario there is really no fomenting or fractioning.

Maybe Rhaenyra remains named heir, maybe not. But there would be no budding Civil War amongst the realm.

Come to think of it, the original sin is really marrying Alicent. You don't do that, the Hightower's just remain a mid major House with some schemey men.

I don't think they would still be married. Corlys approached Viserys about marrying Leana. Viserys approached Corlys about Rhaenyra marrying Laenor because he was backed into a corner. Maybe I am forgetting the original proposal from Corlys to Viserys and it involved both marriages.

Also, if the R & L situation proceeds the same way, maybe Corlys changes his mind a little bit over names. He has grandsons from both marriages. One is clearly his and the other clearly is not. Maybe he pursues the action that raises his legacy through blood and name.

Otto Hightower's suggestion of marrying Rhaenyra to Aegon wouldn't have been the worst idea she is still capable of having children and he seems like he is ready to jump in bed.

I think the best part of the show is that while the looming conflict has been framed as inevitable it really wasn’t/isn’t and that’s the tragedy of it

give the fat dude credit here he really did craft a compelling story out of whole cloth

E6 was so sad for me because it made you (or me at least) dwell on this. It didnt have to happen. The king marries the right childbride? No marriage. Otto doesnt serve his daughter up the grieving king? Same.

and many more.

People and their personal failings, blowing past the off ramps, and getting everyone killed.

Would be nice if he finished that other story...

Same with GOT, and in fact, this is pretty true for many major events in the real world (Civil War, a bunch of revolutions, World Wars, etc.).

A lot of his inspiration came from a civil war in England known as the Anarchy. King Henry I had named his daughter Matilda his heir and made the barons swear to uphold her rights. After he died however her cousin Stephen of Blois claimed the crown. The war was incredibly destructive and neither side achieved much.

Yeah but if all the people with dragons say they are legitimate then who is gonna say otherwise?

To rebel you have to have an army and in this case Dragons. Only 3 branches of family have Dragons: Targs, Valyrions, and Hightowers. I realize that the Valyrions and Hightowers only have dragons cuz of their Targ marriages but they have them non the less. If the half Targ/half "Valyrion" heir to the throne marries the half Targ/half Hightower princess than the offspring and future heirs would be 1/4 Hightower, 1/4 Valyrion, and 1/2 Targ which should satisfy all the dragon owning Families. No other family would have the strength to rebel or call the legitimacy of the heirs into question. and if they did, they would be burned to a crisp.

The only reason we have this civil war is cuz both sides have Dragons.

This is my whole argument in a nutshell. If the Hightowers would’ve backed Rhaenyra, no one else would’ve said shite, because they would have all the dragons

Didn't know there was such a feverish contingency of 8th century patriarchy defenders around here lol

What is it? Does Alicent get you going cause you imagine a world where a woman would actually be with you since she would feel forced to due to laws and pressure?

You know, there are countries where that dream can come true for you? Woman will even be forced to cover their whole bodies so as to not risk you getting jealous and having to kill her.

Bronc the Feminist....you seem kinda slow so let me spell it out for you.

ASOIAF is a medievel and feudal setting...not unlike the middle ages of europe circa the 9th - 13th century. IT IS A PATRIARCHIAL SOCIETY. there is no feminism during this time and women are expected to act a certain way and play a specific role.

no matter how hard you try to deny it, Rhaenyra is a whore in that world which i've just described. and she has bastards which is an abomination in that world. Alicent on the other hand is a fine example of how a Lady in that world is expected to act.

now please stop smearing your feces all over this thread trying to shoehorn your post-modern ideals in a world where it doesn't exist.

Legitimized bastards are not seen as abominations. Bastards aren't seen as abominations either.

His poly is that there is a double standard for women in Westeros.

But I also think there is a 0% chance Alicent didn’t frick the king before they were married .

Imagine being the type of incel that thinks hes sitting on the high horse naming a woman that had sex with roughly 3 people consensually across 20 years as a “whore”

I swear those old jokes during the Iraq War about hyper social conservatives just being America’s version of Isis/Taliban - Spider-Man pointing at Spider-man - really is shining thru with a show about dragons of all things lol….

Also, as already discussed, bastards very often have had legit claims to the throne in Martin’s world. You throwing around GoT yet somehow missed the fricking multi season plot about Robert’s bastards and Cersei hunting them down, and Gendry becoming a threat or weapon based on which faction he ended up near because like Rhaenyra, Gendry had the blood of the ruler in him and therefore had a claim to the throne.

If this is the kind of discussion we can expect on all future episodes I guess it was fun while it lasted ??. I get that you support certain characters but you are taking it weirdly personal.

I’m sorry, but him dragging his aggressive incel bullshite into this thread and then getting basic facts wrong(like bastards are seen as an abomination, being incapable of grasping how the book was written from biased perspectives of authors) when literally three of the biggest events in all of Martin’s world all involved bastards having legitimate, rightful claims to the throne(Blackfyre Rebellion, Gendry Baratheon, Jon Snow) can only be described as confidence in the face of overwhelming retardation.

And no offense QC, but both you and other team Greener’s seem to have in common that you ignore obvious context in order to support her. Boodis is just amongst the most insufferable, since his support is clearly built entiriely around the fact that for him there is no greater good than a woman being subservient to her patriarchal duties in this world, and no greater sin to him than not. Even if the former is playing genocide, fomenting treason and open war, wanting to cut out the eyes of children and attempted to kill the King’s daughter, that all means nothing compared to the greatest sin of a woman having decisions in who she consensually fricks lol

I’m well aware that the Greens are devious snakes. I just enjoy their characters from reading the books especially Larys and Aemond. In the end we’re all just cheering on fictional characters in a story that has already been written so the end is already decided and it wont matter who we like the best. I can tell you enjoy the show and pick up on a lot of what is going on so you shouldn’t let others opinions ruin that experience for you. These discussions are supposed to be fun!

TBC I wasnt referring to you in anyway, I enjoyed going back and forth with you on Greens vs Targaryens yesterday, even if I do think you sometimes were frustratingly ignoring context lol, and I think that stuff forces people to have fun analyzing why they like or dont root for people, and whether it holds up....boodis though is just a miserable shite that seems to have a weird relishment of subservient patriarchal woman, and annoyance with anyone that doesnt, who yeah, unless prompted I should be ignoring more. You are correct

Blackfyre Rebellion, Gendry Baratheon, Jon Snow

I think there are stark differences here.

1. Blackfyre - It's been a while since I read the history of Westeros book, but I believe the controversy started because the king legitimized his bastard. The king admitted the kid was a bastard but made the proclamation that he is legitimate. The blacks have not done that. They are still passing off a lie that nobody believes.

2. Gendry - In this scenario, Gendry was the best that was left. In the event that there are no true born heirs of Robert (since Cersei's kids were not his), Gendry is all they have left. It's either that, or start a new line. If Robert had a true born heir, Gendry would be of little value.

3. Jon Snow - Admittedly, I stopped watching when the show passed the books. So, I have no idea what they did with him in GOT.

I would argue I'm not team green or black. They're all pretty despicable. I am most often arguing that there wasn't a ton of choice in all of this once Aegon as born.
