What instances can you think of where a rival or villain showed honor in defeat or some form of respect for the protagonist?

A few:

1. Teddy KGB's "Pay that man his money" scene in Rounders.

2. Johnny Lawrence's "You're all right, Larusso. Good match" moment in The Karate Kid.

3. Smasher, who talked a lot of shite to Stallone, shaking hands with him after losing a bet in Over The Top.

4. Bart Taylor slowing to a stop to take Cru Jones one-on-one on the final lap of Hell Track in Rad.

5. Apollo Creed raising Rocky's arm and wishing him luck after losing to him in Rocky II.

Roland - The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Never really a villain, but villain-adjacent.

Roland was a badass. Probably one of the best parts of that movie.

Count Dooku always seemed pretty honorable to me. I think that was just from Christopher Lee’s portrayal.

Thanos was an honorable villain. He did everything the right way on his quest for the stones. And when the Avengers cheated and used time travel to beat him, he took his dusting like a man.

Johnny was the hero. Laruso just continued being a dick.

Thanos: I hope they remember you.

Sort of trash talk and respect at the same time, but I liked that they had him give some credit to Tony.

I don’t think Ivan Drago was an honorable rival or villain. He was dirty as all frick and wanted to kill his opponents more than beating them. Apollo is the honorable rival for Rocky.
