Pretty sure the quote was
"What kind of mother misses their daughters wedding"

Dudes...he was near crying after the wife says something about "Who's mother doesn't go to their child's wedding?" (something like this)
That is the reason I think it is his wife that is sick. Like I said before, the show never established a tight relationship with his mom. Yes, I know, it would be sad regardless to think of your dead mom. But him being upset with the mother being sick and realizing she won't be alive to see her daughter get married fits with the theme of the episode. They were realizing that they've heard all of their stories. The wife is worried that Ted won't live for the future but will become (remain) a person obsessed with telling stories about the past.
Also, someone mentioned the kids looking bored. That is my one hope that the mother is alive. They don't seem to be listening to a story about their dead mother. But, that can be because; 1. the writers didn't plan to have the mother be dead from the beginning or 2. they didn't want the audience to catch on long before the big reveal.
I am torn on this. I'd like to see it end on a happy note. But I also think that ending with the mother being dead will put the show on a whole new level. It will be remembered as the show that set up this very dramatic ending. It will create a reason to watch every episode from the start to see if they have been foreshadowing it from the beginning. It will make the show bigger than just Friends 2.0.
Of course, it could be Ted's mom that he is sad about and I am just spouting off about nothing.

I take that as Ted's mom died before his wedding to the mother.
I take it that he is upset that his wife won't be around for her daughter's wedding.
Plus the mother also said something to the effect of " I'm afraid you'll end up living in your past stories", and was seriously worried about it.

Yeah, I can see that now.
I am torn like a few others mentioned on that.
I don't know if I want my light hearted sit com to go dark and heavy drama ending like that.
But then, the more I think about it, the more I think they will go that route.
They have done stuff like that. Marshall's dad dying just off the top of my head.
I can see it now.
Still debating whether this will work though.

It was kind of soon to throw that out there though. You would think they would wait until the second to last episode to throw a hint like that out there. I guess they could be trying to trick everyone into thinking she is dying, only to have ir revealed that she survived and/or wasn't dead at the last minute, and have everyone be relieved or whatever.

I actually like that they did it this early if this is the route they go. Instead of coming out of left field towards the very end, they are going to ease us into it (I would assume). If they revealed she was dying in, for instance, the last two episodes, people might feel betrayed and pissed. If they set it up for a while (they actually seemed to have set it up last season) then the audience can come to grips with it and appreciate the depth of the show.
Also, to the guy mentioning Marshall's dad dying. My buddy disagreed with my thought on the wife dying and said the show hasn't been that serious. I started to rattle off all of the sad/serious events of the show and surprised myself at how many there actually were.

That was me. I know they've been more, I just can't remember anything.
And, you said they've been setting it up possibly since last season? Can you give some examples?

Last scene in this series is going to be the six of them in old people costume playing cards at a beach house. Book it.

marshall's dad, robin no kids, wayne brady's divorce, barney's issues with his dad, teds parents divorce, robins issues with her dad, lily's issues with her dad, stella leaving ted at the altar, that's just off the top of my head. There are more I'm sure. The shows been on for 9 years.

This actually may have been earlier in this season, I can't really remember. But there was an episode where Ted pretty much gives up hope. While talking to his kids he says something along the lines of "If I knew where your mother was, you know what I would do. I would find her and do whatever I could just to have that much more time with her". While he is telling his kids this, present Ted is running around New York to get to her apartment and the scene ends with him crying looking at her through her doorway (they don't show the mother. You are just supposed to assume this is what would happen if Ted did actually know where the mother was). Many people on here started throwing out that they made it sound like the mother was dead and that is the reason Ted said he would do whatever he needed to spend more time with her. Then some people used the college reunion as a way to debunk her being dead. I bought that argument for a while until someone in this thread actually confirmed that the timeline would work for her not to be alive.
This is a pretty good summary.

I just read another theory that could be nice. She may still be sick when Ted is telling the story to the kids and is in surgery or something. Ted is telling the stories to pass the time and the series ends with the mother coming out of some successful surgery to remove cancer or something. That could be pleasant finale that doesn't make us all depressed as hell.

these last few episodes have fueled my hatred of lily to new levels

Yeah, if the college reunion was 2020, last night's scene with the mother was in 2024.
So that leaves 6 years til 2030 when he's telling the kids the story. Lots can happen.
Hell, he can "finally let Robin go" about 18 times in that span.

the 45 day speech.
this is one in the line of many throughout the series that makes me believe the mother is dead. another is the fact that he's telling the kids this story. there are quite a few others if you look up theories on the internet.

i think this in all likelihood is the more fitting ending to the show, and i hope that's the route they take. but they've definitely been building up that something is wrong with the mother. or something happens to her around the time that he's telling these stories.

I would bet my house on the biological mother dying at the point of this episode.
I wouldn't make that bet. The writers are definitely setting that up, I agree. Ted tearing up tonight is definitely tipping the idea the mother is dying during that scene...
.. which is why I think it's not going to happen. The writers have always been aware of fan theories and have intentionally messed with the audience in the past due to popular theories (Stella with a yellow umbrella, pretty much an entire season teasing Barney's sister). This show loves -- LOVES - false leads and dead ends. I think they WANT us to think the mother is dead, knowing that is a popular theory (heck even Jason Siegel has joked about it).
I think they are leading you on. I think it's Ted's mother, and that's why he left the wedding early. And yes, you can get choked up by a parent's death 15 years after the fact.

Man. I took it to mean Ted was sad about his Mom not being alive. Does Ted have a sister? If not, that doesn't make sense. This sucks.

My issue with this is that it wouldn't fit with how their scenes played out in the episode. Ted's wife was worried that Ted wouldn't live for the future and would only retell stories of the past. If it is his mother that died, then that wouldn't really make sense. Also, they both agreed to just enjoy each other's company. Ted is teary eyed when they say this. If the only reason for that comment is because they need to stop telling stories, then it loses a lot of it's luster.
I do hope they pull a misdirection, but I just don't expect it to be about his mother. I hope it is that the mother isn't dead yet and the story ends with her recovering some kind of way.
Another thought just went though my mind. They haven't revealed the mother's name yet, right? It would be depressing as hell if the last scene was a shot of her gravestone and that is the only time her name is mentioned.

the next episode is titled "Daisy."
i wonder if that's the mother's name…or the FLOWERS ON HER DEATHBED.

The wedding bride jokes were disappointing.
I am on the mother's dead team.
