She is referred to as Aunt Robin. No way that happens.
Just because they call her Aunt Robin doesn't mean she isn't their step-mother. They obviously would've known her before the mother's death as Aunt Robin, so they would probably still call her that.
I'm just saying, the very first episode is how he met Robin. I would bet my house on the biological mother dying at the point of this episode. I just think they are playing the whole Ted can't get over Robin for the whole series run for there not to be a reason for it.

I just looked...the reunion was in 2020.
So she was alive at that point.

What about when Ted sees the waitress in Hong Kong?

In the last ep, Doogie comes out of the closet.

Damn, it always seemed likely that he was telling the story of his dead wife, but I had hoped the college reunion flash forward had ruined that. Looks like the timing works.

The possibility is very real that his mom died before his wedding....and that is why he was so veklempt.

I don't think so. Everything is playing out like his wife is dead. His mom dying would be out of nowhere. They haven't really established a tight relationship with his mom. While it will be very sad, they have been building Ted's wife dying.

I never said you were wrong, just that I don't see it being his mom. I just think it's going to be gut wrenching, but ending on a somber note will leave a lasting legacy.

I just rewatched the pilot.
1st - the story is being told in 2030. So, 10 years post-college reunion.
2nd - the pilot is amazing. sets the story and characters so well. Even has Ranjeet and my boy Carl.
3rd - it's still amazing that almost 7-8 years/seasons of the story have to do with Robin in the context of telling his children the story. How embarrassing would it be to constantly admit to your children that you loved their Aunt Robin up until/even through the day of her wedding. There will be some kind of twist with Robin at the end.

I watched the pilot after I had watched seasons 3-6.

The music between scenes??? The frick?

sure, but in terms of character development and setting up the rest of the series, I definitely thought it succeeded.

Something is wrong with the wife. No telling if she pulls through but it's implied she won't be there for her daughters wedding

Someone on twitter said it could be his mom died before his sisters wedding. But I think it has to be the mother.

This episode has got me thinking of the finale and how truly sad it can really be. I think it will be bitter sweet. We will see the joy of Ted meeting her, then in the next scene, they will have the foreshadowed reveal that she is dead. And it will be devastating. And it will be an ode to the writers that they made us care so much in such a short period of time.

The children always look bored as hell and tired of listening to the story. If the mother is dead, that's kind of crappy way to act while listening to the story.

If the mother is dead at the end of this story, I can't even explain how kissed I'll be. HIMYM is supposed to be a feel good comedy. No one watches this show to be sad or depressed. The writers need to realize what type of show they are making and not just go for the wow super shocking ending. It wouldn't give the show some deeper meaning. It would just leave it off on a really sour note.

His story started what, 8 years before he actually met their mother? I'd be bored too (and probably pretty upset) if I had to listen to him talk about how he met Robin, how he couldn't ever get over her, and stories about his friends other exploits 8 or so years before he ever met the mom. That's kind if crappy of him IYAM.

Dudes...he was near crying after the wife says something about "Who's mother doesn't go to their child's wedding?" (something like this)
Help me out here with the actual quote.
I take that as Ted's mom died before his wedding to the mother.
And, that scene took place in 2024.
