I may get a lot of disagreement here, but the fact that she had such a tough time getting over her ex, it will make the Ted Robin thing fit so much better. We have all bitched about Ted going back to the Robin well way too many times, but it will likely be the thing that brings them together.
This is a great point I hadn't thought of. Very clever way of tying all that together and going right after something fans have long criticized.
This is gonna end up as one of my favorites, just wish it had been an hour or so to really flesh out some of those events she had going on

Great episode, loved the references to the naked man and puzzles. Cool to see the chance almost meetings.
La vie en rose part was amazing.
Weird to see the differences they had, where she found the one and lost him, then gave up on love and he was always seeking it.
Not sure if it really tied up the jealous Rachel Bilson angle well enough though. Since the mother was over guys and wasn't dating, the only reason Rachel Bilson had to be jealous of her roommate for is that she really had feelings for her and didn't want Ted messing around with the mother. I could accept that as more of a reason than the mother pulling dudes off Rachel Bilson.
I am betting Lily is going to get taken to see the Captain to tell him she isn't going to Italy to let Marshall pursue his dream to try and redeem her character. Still going with Ranjeet as who drives her.

Heavy stuff.
Went to high school with my wife (she was 2 years younger). Didn't know she existed at the time

She has a van, not a black town car.
And if the moment where she plays La vie en rose is accurate showing where everyone is at while she is playing, then Lily is driving away in the car while she is playing.

Probably happens a lot more than you think.

Great episode, but I'm glad the writers dispensed with the checklist of things that the mother had to do as quickly as possible. I know a lot fans really cared about things like the umbrella and the Econ class, but I didn't really need to see that stuff from her perspective. We knew it happened. The episode quickly could have devolved into a clip show, but it really tried to go easy on the Spot the Reference game. I did like how her story starts at the first episode of HIMYM. Max died the same night Ted meets Robin.
But what made this episode great is the performance of the Mother. She got me to care about Max in an almost entirely silent scene, and the scene on the porch? Oh my God. She finally lets go of her first love and takes it as permission to find love, not to settle for someone she doesn't love. As soon as she decides to stop living in the past, her future begins (she just doesn't know it yet).
The final scene with her singing La Vie en Rose on the ukulele was just amazing. But it's not sad for her. She broke off her engagement, but for the first time in nine years, she is open to love and truly living life. The universe will reward her with Douchey Ted, her second winning lottery ticket. It was a touching scene, and we got her whole emotional journey in 30 minutes. It doesn't work without that amazing performance.
Well, that and turning and English muffin into a Muppet.

I didn't realize until the 2nd time watching this series how selfish lily can be. She isn't always but what a train wreck. The only redeeming quality is that she likes it dirty

Yeah, at the risk of sounding like a complete tool, I've always wondered how close I came to meeting my wife before we met. We hung out at the same bars/night spots, ate at the same restaurants, and even had a few mutual friends. There just had to be some times where we were probably in the same place at the same time.

I might agree with you if they werent doing entire episodes on how old people walk like zombies and garbage like that
They had plenty of time (too much time apparently) to do it right. There were so many little things that they gave the audience throughout the run that they made a big deal about to keep people appeased, and then just skimmed through it in 15 minutes and missed a lot
Get one of your interns to go back and look for all the "well get to that later" that they never explained and then make the entire season tying up those loose ends and throw in a chunk of the season thats dedicated to the girl that the whole show is about but weve never met before this season. Keep the beautiful song and the storylines from tonight, just stretch it out and add more detail. Within 10 minutes you had to find out about the dead bf, find out hes dead, then find out she takes forever getting over him, gets almost engaged, and then shes at the wedding. It was just sooo much crammed in for no reason
But again i loved that song. That might be the most ive ever ben attracted to a chick for a 5 minute interval

The thing about that song is that it was truely beautiful. In real life, or a TV show, one can understand how you could fall in love with that voice. I agree, i was lost in that song for about 5 minutes.

Well, since you bring it up, let's take that episode. The Barney and Robin try to do it before old people show up was the b-plot, but was resolved wonderfully by a true character moment: Barney's brother "taking the bullet" as a wedding gift. Everyone hates dealing with their extended family, but Wayne Brady knows that in this instance, Barney's needs outweighs his.
But, really, that episode was about Ted putting NY behind him. He has the checklist of things to do one last time, and what to say goodbye to, only to have Lilly remind him that he's not just saying goodbye to good stuff, but the terrible stuff to. You can't just change places, you have to truly move on from the things holding you back. It's one of the few times Lilly's been not horrible and was an important step in Ted closing this chapter of his life. You can call it filler, but that's an important emotional beat. Besides, the Princess Bride references were great.
And I just fundamentally disagree about keeping people appeased. this show has never been about the mother. It's always been an excuse to show five best friends hanging out in NYC and growing into adults together. All of the references and mythology are funny, but ultimately not very important. The show lives and dies on the relationship between these characters, and its never lost sight of that (well, and being funny). The writers have consistently shown they are more interested in character beats, and the show is better for it.
That's what made their use of the mother here so great. They just flew past the trivia as quickly as possible and instead got to the core of her character. She's not "the mother" because she has a yellow umbrella or plays the bass. she's the mother because of her genuine love for her first love, and how it took her time to move on. And because she can sing La Vie en Rose. Those are things we didn't know until tonight, but those are the things that were important. Not that she knows the Naked Man.

As much as everyone complains about Douchey Ted, it's great that this episode has allowed so many to express what most would call their "inner douche" and it be okay. Because everyone gets it.

Dont get me started on how retarded the "im moving to chicago" thing was

Im just saying there were a ton of "yellow umbrella" incidents and "well get to that laters" to get people talking and guessing about the mother and keeping peoples interest in the show
If you cant see that showing the mother at the end of last season wasnt strictly "appeasement" then youre right about the fundamentally disagreement we have.

Why cant we have both in more detail and more developed
I know theres been at the very least 2 episodes that were entirely just space fillers, i dont care what bogus greys anatomy epiphany that they gave at the end to give you justification for it, they were pointless.
I just dont see the rush. Give that part of the story some breathing room.

I also enjoyed trying to find members of the group in the background in different scenes. For instance, there was one picture that the mother was in and you could see half of Robin's face sitting in the booth in the back for a split second. I thought it was pretty cool.
Also, I've had the convo with my fiance about the times we may have crossed paths without realizing it. She was born in Houston and went to aTm while I was raised in NOLA and went to LSU, so, there weren't many times. But it was fun trying to think of times. I'm sure others have done it since the show aired as well.

This season's storytelling has been very schitzophrenic. They want us to believe so much is happening in 3 days before the wedding but throw entirely too much stuff in there for it to even be reasonable.
Especially when you look at it from the standpoint of people making emotional decisions. If this were a normal season where each episode roughly happened in normal time, these emotional decisions would still seem pretty forced and abrupt, but now they're happening in 3 days.
