That's because the studio has shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, which will be an origin story featuring a teen superheroine. This effectively removes an actor of Cavill's age from the storyline's equation given that Superman, aka Kal-El, would be an infant, according to DC lore.
This is an odd decision. Oh a Supergirl movie should be fine. The CW series gets decent enough ratings for that type of show. And a teen-aged Supergirl would at least let them cast an actress that won't be ready to apply for Social Security after a couple of movies.
Its the Superman would be an infant that surprises me. Supergirl has always been either his younger cousin (original origin) from the bottle city of Kandor, or, though a mix up, was supposed to be his guardian/baby sitter when he arrived on Earth but her pod was delayed and she wound up arriving (in suspended animation) decades after Supes had gotten here.
Supergirl works a lot better if you acknowledge her more famous cousin and have him show up... even if it is for a brief cameo. I think they are looking for a soft reboot of the entire shared Universe and are hoping to recast as many of the roles as they can get away with.

Affleck and Cavill were both fine picks for their respective characters, but WB/DC is retarded and decided to make everything dark and gritty due to Snyder.

DC is gonna be the female superhero series going forward. Wonder Woman will be the big star. Supergirl and Birds of Prey are in development now. Harley will likely take on a bigger role in Suicide Squad 2.

He looked the part to a tee IMO. But I don't think he's a very good actor. I know a lot here do think that, but he kinda sucks IMO. Or he at least certainly did in Man of Steel, BvS, and the last M:I movie.

None of that officially confirms his departure so I will wait for an official press release from Warner Bros. or for him to outright come out and say it before I take this as anything more than speculation. The article itself says neither have done so as of yet, and the rest of it just says that there were supposedly scheduling conflicts (due to his work on The Witcher) keeping him from a cameo in Shazam, and that his character likely wouldn't appear in their planned Supergirl movie. Just sounds like blind assumptions.
