Also the key missing part was the Sci-Fi channel doc “Curse of the Blair Witch” the fake documentary to promote the film that gave further backstory to the myth of the Blair Witch and presented itself as a real documentary ala In Search Of. That shite is unnerving and down right creepy. Definitely recommend as a must watch by everyone, even if you didn’t like the movie. Trust me. Watch It!

I think it's very scary and I like the fact that it looks genuine. It comes across like 3 randos lost int eh woods and something horrible is happening to them but they don't really even know what and neither do you.

The whole concept of the found footage genre is that it's supposedly real footage shot and later recovered, but movies in that genre are now way too "movie", too many setup shots and clean resolutions.

I loved the ending too, if that situation were to happen that's exactly how it would go down. The camera being just sorta knocked to the gourd and not really hearing or seeing much The mystery of what happened and who did it.

The biggest critics of the movie miss the point of it, they want a generic hollywood jump scare slop fest.

I’m in the minority, but the Blair Witch 2 freaked me out more.

I knew the Blair Witch was fake before seeing it so it pretty much sucked.

I will always defend this movie. Had this been made after 2000 it wouldn't have had the same effect.

The way they marketed this movie when it came out was genius. Probably one of the best marketing campaigns for a movie I have ever witnessed

This is why I hate the movie so much. I went into it like millions of others that this was the Excorcist of the 90s. It wasn't even fricking close. It was a steaming pile of dogshit with a home video camera and kids scared out of their mind with nothing to be scared of.

Still #1 most disappointing movie of all time for me. The way the group of girls we hung out with talked about it being SO scary had us going in with high hopes. Still convinced people said it was great because they felt compelled to like it due to the early word of mouth.

Watched it in the theaters when it came out and thought it sucked. I really liked the concept, but wish the promotions showed less of the movie, maybe it was just hyped too much. The shaky camera also got old and we just laughed at it as it progressed. Maybe I should watch it again, but probably won’t.

It didn't hold up the first time. What a huge letdown. Walked out feeling ripped off.

I remember when this came out my sister had a sleepover and her and her friends watched it. We decided to mess with them all night. I put a face on a long pole and would have it peek through her window. Then we would gaslight them into thinking they were crazy. Then repeat.

I really enjoyed the viral marketing around it.

The movie itself was ok. Not great.

A girl I worked with was really into the movie. She wouldn't shut up about it. "Oh my God. That movie was sooooo scary. I couldn't sleep after the first time I watched it."

Another coworker and I knew where she lived. One night we were kind of drunk, and decided to play a prank on her. We made a bunch of those stick figures from the movie.

We went to her house around 3am and hung them from the trees on her property. I'm surprised we weren't busted because we were laughing so much.

The next day I drove by her house to see her reaction. There was some old guy looking at all these weird stick figures hanging from the trees in his front yard...

We pranked the wrong house...

same. i was the absolute perfect Blair Witch viewer. i had no idea what it was, some friend called me and said he had tickets to some super creepy documentary that was playing in the River Oaks Theater in Houston (before the wide release, it was only playing at this spot in Houston). went and watched it with absolutely zero knowledge or expectations. stayed up after the movie doing the 1999 version of internet deep diving (basically just their own website they put up). scared the absolute frick out of me.

That was the thing. It wasn't just the movie, it was that the promotion was so interactive, going to the site, watching the "real" documentary on Sci-Fi Channel... By the time you got to the theater you were fully invested in watching the "found" footage.

there are pretty much just two camps here. the people that went into it thinking it was real were super scared and have great memories of it. people that already knew it was fake but heard a bunch of hype surrounding it hate it. honestly, both perspectives make complete sense based on your personal experience.

if i had seen it a few weeks later at the local mega-theater when it had the wide release, i would have probably been like some of you and thought it was stupid.

It doesn't hit the same I imagine for folks who weren't around and engaged in the marketing around the movie in 1999. It was as much about the appearance that the movie was "real found footage" and the internet at the time supporting that (which is obviously nothing like our internet today). And it was the first widespread movie to do that kind of thing.

I was a Senior in HS in '99 so I was right in the thick of the marketing and saw the movie before it came out that it wasn't real. I then went on a camping trip right after, so it sufficiently scared the shite out of me.

I can completely understand it not holding up or being good to anyone who wasn't present for that snapshot in time.

Perhaps for a lot of people it was that, but it sincerely freaked me out pretty good. I was in 6th grade though. And we lived out in the sticks with nothing but undeveloped forest around us.
