On May 19th, 1999, George Lucas changed movies forever. The long-anticipated Star Wars prequel Episode I: The Phantom Menace hit theaters, returning to a world that fans had thought they’d never see again. For some, excitement turned to confusion, puzzlement, and outright anger by the time the credits rolled, and Lucas’s grand cinematic experiment was off to a rocky start. Looking back at the film two decades later, The Phantom Menace proved to be a precursor for the cinematic environment that we now find ourselves in. It was a special effects revolution, the first inkling that stories might never end, and a film where the director and cast faced enormous pushback from fans.

quote:

The response from the fans of the original films was brutal, especially on the actors and Lucas. Ahmed Best, the actor behind Jar Jar Binks, noted that he contemplated suicide, while Jake Lloyd noted that the reaction turned his life into a “living hell.” (He’s since left the film industry.) Lucas aired his frustrations in another interview, asking “Why would I make any more, when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?

Which film does the M/TV Board hate more...The Phantom Menace or TLJ?

AS much as it pains me... agreed.

Midichlorians > The entire casino side quest.

And also... still has one of the most epic lightsaber fights in the entire franchise. It takes a steaming dump on that cosplay fight in TLJ.

As an ironic aside. It’s TPM bday on the same day D&Ds (the new SW writers) GoT runs officially ends. Uh oh.

Wow I remember going to the theaters for this as a 10 year old kid.

The hype was off the charts

They both suck, but for very different reasons.

The Mummy with Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz is also celebrating its 20th anniversary release this month. Hard to believe it's been 20 years since those two films came out in theaters...

This and Batman are the two most hyped movies I can remember. People were standing in line a week before release. At least Batman was good.

No doubt. The score that went with that was perfect.

For those that may not know...most of the SW movies are available right now on TBS on demand via Hulu w/ live tv.

We watched Empire on Friday night (because it is so bad-arse) .... ROTJ last night...and only watching TPM now because the smaller children wanted it.

TPM sucks....but you could take that suckiness and multiply it by a billion...and it would still be better than TLJ.

TLJ is banned in my house. There is no TLJ.

Maul could have been used so much better over the series.

Eventually could have filled the role of snoke. Older maul, battle worn by time and scarred by life. Still a double saber badass, In the role as supreme leader, while the emperor is still alive and pulling the real strings.

Luke and the emperor finally get their battle.

While we learn Rey is obi wan's grand daughter or some shite.

+1. Count Dooku and Grievous were unnecessary.

If you believe the buzz, that’s actually what George intended originally.

It's amazing TLJ was so bad it made people like the prequels.

They may suck and have terrible dialogue but at least they feel like star wars.

Not here. I hate the prequels and always will, I'll never forget the way this made me feel 20 years ago and the clones was unforgivable.

The prequels didn't feel like Star Wars to me and neither do the recent ones. I don't rate them, all shite except for Rogue.
