Haha. There is no way Parasite was the actual best picture.

Let me start by saying I thought the movie was awesome. But, come on, it was absolutely outrageous. There is no way that film was worthy of best picture.

it’s a great movie but not much better than a lot of other films Korea has been pumping out for years. It was just a weak field overall.

Me too. 1917 and Jojo were much better movies. Parasite was different though, and well made.

I wanted some sort of redemption angle for Parasite. Either one of the dads, the son. Some sort of resolution. I couldn’t even figure out who’s story it was. It’s like it shifted focus from the son to the dad.

Yeah. It was pretty heavy handed with the symbolism

1917 looks like a one trick pony.

One of the most overrated movies I’ve ever seen. People in the other thread were claiming it was the best movie this decade. LOL. There wasn’t even a clear message throughout the entire movie and the plot was ridiculous. 6.5/10

If the message was: it sucks to be poor, it’s good to be rich, but even rich people have problems, and not all poor people are evil, but sometimes they can be, etc.

I don’t know.

Haven't seen JoJo but it looks good.
Haven't seen Ford vs Ferrari.
1917 was disappointing and no way the best movie. Didn't feel very original.
Started watching Once Upon a Time in Hollywood but I turned it off because it was boring compared to other QT films.
I liked Parasite the best out of all of them. It felt original.
Let's be honest though. There's not too many original films coming out of Hollywood these days. I actually prefer foreign market films because they are original and don't have some Hollywood exec making you rewrite the script half a dozen times cause it not going to make bank at the box office. If execs would keep their mits out of films, there would probably be a lot if great movies made. Obviously they are worried about the bottom line more than making a good/great movie.

The message in Parasite was that it was the rich family who were the actual parasites on society. They made enough money to support three separate families, while still having more than they would ever need. All the while there were many, many poor people who couldn’t find jobs, lived in basements that flooded with actual shite, etc. etc. That was the tragedy of the ending - the son dreams of making enough money to be able to buy the house and free his dad, but we, the omniscient and socially aware audience, know that because he was born poor, he is doomed to remain poor with no legitimate means of advancing himself. Only through the elimination of class can the problems presented by the movie be solved.

At least, so teaches socialism.

That's not really relevant. This was the Korean film made for the Korean audience that resonated with the western audience (I think the buzz started at Cannes).

This is a difficult question because Parasite was written for the Korean audience. An American adaptation would have to incorporate the same themes but substitute familiar American cultural cues/traits/values.

I think you're taking the interpretation a bit too far. You can criticize the effects of class divisions without having to conclude that the complete elimination of class is the answer. Where does Bong imply this?

And yes, I agree that we are supposed to assume that the son will never be rich enough to buy the house. But that's a reflection and criticism of reality (that the poor are less likely to rise in society). Again, the criticism doesn't imply that socialism is the answer.
