If it were American and not foreign does it still win?

I just looked it up and only 10 foreign films have ever even been nominated for best picture

Parasite is the first movie not in English to win it

But by all means hold on to your false xenophobic narrative, don’t let facts get in the way.

The rich dad started and owned his own tech company though. I thought that implied he had created jobs and wealth for more than just his family. Maybe that was the point though. Modern society is set up where only the largess of the wealthy allow the poor to survive.

. I think a redemption arc is just good story telling.

This was the Korean film made for the Korean audience that resonated with the western audience (I think the buzz started at Cannes).

Absolutely relevant. Yes, it was a “Korean film for Korean audiences” but this director had 2 movies with mainstream US success in snowpiercer and Okja. Plus a third that had success in streaming in the Host. If there was ever a clear path to embrace something they’ve been neglecting for over a decade, it was this.

I’m 100% with you. Good movie but not oscar good. It’s almost like someone decided one day that everyone has to sing it’s praises and all of a sudden it happened.

But does it have to be the only good storytelling?

I think it's fine to acknowledge a movie not matching your expectations for what it would be, but we should judge the quality of a movie on its terms, not those misinformed expectations.

“Someone”

It was pretty much everyone. It was unanimously awarded the Palme d’Or at Cannes. It was the clear favorite film of critics last year. Even average fans (according to IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes) have ranked it over board favorites 1917 and Joker. Hell, the thread on this site was overwhelmingly positive. It basically wasn’t until it won all the oscars that people (many of whom clearly hadn’t seen it) started deciding that it couldn’t possibly have been the best picture.

actually I liked it a lot. It was a well crafted and well shot movie. I don’t see it until after the oscars. And everyone here was raving about it. I enjoyed it.
It just turned into kind of a mess at the end. It isn’t without its flaws.

1917 looks like a one trick pony.
. Ehh. That’s a pretty neat trick though.

You can criticize the effects of class divisions without having to conclude that the complete elimination of class is the answer. Where does Bong imply this?

And yes, I agree that we are supposed to assume that the son will never be rich enough to buy the house. But that's a reflection and criticism of reality (that the poor are less likely to rise in society). Again, the criticism doesn't imply that socialism is the answer.

This. But unfortunately we’re in a time where people assume any sort of negative portrayal of “x” must mean it’s a full supporter of “z”

It was an excellent, entertaining film. Much better and more deserving of the Best Picture Oscar than the boring arse Joker movie.
