EXCLU: Disney continues to make strides in diversifying its classic characters and is doing it once again as sources tell Deadline Yara Shahidi is set to play Tinkerbell in David Lowery’s Peter Pan and Wendy. This would mark the first time a person of color has filled the role that has traditionally featured a white actress and follows in the footsteps after Disney set Halle Bailey to play The Little Mermaid.

Shahidi joins Jude Law, who will play Captain Hook, as well as Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson, who will play the title characters. Lowery is on board to direct the project and also co-wrote the script with Toby Halbrooks. Jim Whitaker is producing.

Meh. Tinkerbell is a fairy. I know the character arises from 1900's English literature, but since a fairy is a mythical creature I don't know if you can say it should be as specific race.

That's different than, say, having a black man an/or woman play the character of James Bond. The inspiration and muse for that character is an English white male. I also doubt there were very many, if any, non-white English intelligence agents in the early 1950's. Portraying him as a black male and/or women makes it a COMPLETELY different character. One that isn't "James Bond" as created by Ian Fleming

Still a better choice than Julia Roberts was.

Is this something people really care about?

Does it bother you that a black persons will play a tiny little fairy?

Don’t even know why this qualifies as newsworthy

Maybe it's newsworthy based on literally the first few sentences from the article...

Just because they wrote about it doesn’t make it newsworthy. If these journalists weren’t so race obsessed half our problems would be resolved immediately.

Again, this sort of this is something only racists and crazy people care about.

Looking it up, but apparently Will Smith was originally considered for the role of Captain Hook. This is gonna suck if that thought ever crossed the producers’ minds.

Why is it okay for a black actor to be considered for traditionally white characters, but not the other way around? Reverse racism is still racism.

Disney is laying it on thick. I was at the gym this morning and they had ABC news and ESPN next to each other.

Each had 3 anchors and 5 of the 6 were black. ABC was interviewing a black guest about racial injustice.

All of this to cater to 12% of the US population. Where are all the Asians and Hispanics? Shouldn’t they be pissed?

Yep, now the trades are reporting Hawkman will be played by the black dude in The Invisible Man.

Don't care that she is black. But she is really not a good actor and is monotone.

Always thought it was weird that Disney hasn’t done a South American princess. So much potential with that.

Fortunately (if they stick with the original cartoon) Tinkerbell doesn't talk.

I remember reading that Brazil was the country with the most visitors to Disney outside the US. Epcot was going to do a Brazil pavilion but it’s been delayed. The country fits the bill for the construction
