GoT question from a Hodor:

In S2E8, Jaime is talking to Brienne right after Cat lets him go. He's trying to goad Brienne into fighting him, and tells her "there's only 3 men in the kingdoms who might stand a chance against me." Do the books elaborate on who these 3 were?
Presumably Ser Barristan Selmy was one of them. Ser Arthur Dayne was already dead. The Prince of Flowers, Ser Loras Tyrell, was said to be better than Jaime in one of the earlier scenes by a Lannister soldier. Syrio Forel was already dead at the time of this scene.

The Mountain
Also probably just said as a generic badass term

I don't think it's ever explained more than that one line, but Barristan and the Cleganes seem like the obvious choices.

While he's obviously not one of the three that he was talking about, it should be noted that Ned was giving him all he wanted until random Lannister soldier stabbed him from behind.

Definitely but Jaime barely knew who Oberyn was at the time. Oberyn didn't fight in Robert's Rebellion and got his skills fricking around in Essos. People didn't learn what he could do until the fight he got killed in.

My guess are Barristan Selmy, the Mountain, and the Hound. I really can’t think of anyone else Jaime would be thinking about. It certainly wasn’t Loras and Jaime had no knowledge of Syrio... and regardless Jaime would have torn Syrio apart.

The quote is not in the books. Closet thing is from A Storm of Swords:
“She is stronger than I am.
The realization chilled him. Robert had been stronger than him, to be sure. The White Bull Gerold Hightower as well, in his heyday, and Ser Arthur Dayne. Amongst the living, Greatjon Umber was stronger, Strongboar of Crakehall most likely, both Cleganes for a certainty. The Mountain’s strength was like nothing human. It did not matter. With speed and skill, Jaime could beat.”
Jamie had been beat in tourneys by Jorah Mormont, Sandor Clegane and Loras Tyrell.

I’d put my money on Arya now! I hope she actually gets to show off her skills this final season.

Not today.

The only other one I could think of who hasn’t been mentioned is Areo Hotah, the guard of Doran Martell. We never really got to see what he could do, but he did tell Jamie, “when you were whole, it would have been a good fight”

Celery probably had the best guess.

The Red Viper was such an amazing warrior who let his arrogance end his supremacy too soon

Just finished a rewatch this week and they made a point to show Jaime's face when Ned was keeping up - there was a bit of shock and fear. I think given the age difference and the fact that Jaime hadn't been a in a real fight in a long time (something Ned pointed out), that Jaime was surprised by Ned's prowess.

Loras Tyrell.
From what I remember Loras Tyrell was better on horseback but Jaimie was the superior swordsman

I would say
The Hound
Selmy
Jorah Mormont
Most of the tourney results in books focus on jousting, with some melee mentioned.
Sandor defeated Jaime and Loras (who later defeated Jaime) in same tourney.
Sandor lost to Selmy once but beat him later.
Mormont defeated Jaime at tourney before being banished.
Young Selmy only ever lost to Rhaegar (who also defeated Dayne in same tourney) and Sandor. But this may have been political.
Robert (though dead) was a great melee fighter as is Thoros.
The Hound
Selmy
Jorah Mormont

The Hound and Arya beating Zombie Mountain setting up the assassination of Cersei would be an acceptable end to that storyline IMO.

If not for the spear to the leg. It looked like Ned was about to take Jaime.

She’s still an assassin not a head to head fighter.
I still don’t get how she became a skill full person. Her training included being blinded, sparing the Waif, and running through the streets. Yet somehow she’s a full fledged face changing assassin.

An entire page and not one person has mentioned the best fighter in Westeros.
