I just watched the last few episodes again and was laughing at Granny with the "sword swallower through and through" line

Was this said in the book or something similar?

I don't believe that conversation took place in the book. If I remember correctly I don't think Loras was to wed either girl. In the book Loras has 2 older brothers.

What I did find interesting was when she kept asking Tywin about messing around with his cousins & incest. His wife was his cousin.

Wait what? So the Targs aren't the only ones who practiced incest....

THere is a pattern in the Lannister house also.

Yep and that's how you end up with Mad King redux in Joffrey.

Cousins aren't really seen as incest in Westeros, or really royalty in general. Basically all the major houses of Westeros aren't that far apart and are all distantly related.

Happened a lot with nobles in our world as well. Many people married their cousins and only in the last 100 years have people batted an eye [exception being the early Catholics I beleive were strictly against marrying people within six degrees of separation from you(I think Henry the VIII was the first monarch to famously break this rule as well as the divorces)]

Hell, Queen Victoria, Albert Einstein, Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Darwin, as well as many other inbreeding nobles/monarchs who pulled a Hapsburg/Targaryan to keep the power in their family and not elevate a potential rival.

That's really how royalty was back in the day though. They were all basically inbreds.

So we should expect some famous marriages of cousins in Westerose outside of the Lannisters and the Targs....Right?

I can't think of any.

Hence why many monarchs were hemophiliacs.

Gotta love inbreeding!

I'm not going to give anything away, but there are plenty of prominent families in Westeros that make it a habit of breeding together in order to keep up an alliance. That's really what weddings are all about in Westeros is alliances, not love. Love is seen as a forbidden thing in most fantasy and historic literature. GoT is no different.

I would say that marriage in our society was all about creating alliances until the 20th century.

As usual, just watching now.

Kind of a snoozer episode, but damn, everything involving Daenerys this season is awesome, although in this case I could be influenced by those beautiful tittays.
