Of the suggestions I've seen so far - My vote would be to go old-school with Something Wicked This Way Comes or Watcher in the Woods.

If you want to go REALLY old school (as in "they'll watch a B&W movie") - The original versions of The Blob and Invasion of the Body Snatchers creeped me out pretty good.

I used to LOVE Saturday the 14th when I was growing up.

Neverending Story has some pretty scary moments. Gmork (wolf) and The Nothing.

How about Tales from the Hood, It’s got the hood part and a funeral home that would scare the bejesus out of young white kids.

I have a 9 and a 13 year old. Some of the stuff they can watch together, 13 yr old gets a little more when alone -

Twilight Zones (they love these)
Gremlins
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
The Vampires Assistant
Ghostbusters

I might for this tonight -

excellent recommendation.

Also...The Village, it's rated PG-13 but i can't remember any cursing or anything. Very little if any. 10 year olds will hear far worse on the play ground or at a friends house.

I would pop out the original Day the Earth Stood Still or War of the Worlds.

A 10 year old would love those. Mine did.

Some old Twilight Zone episodes would do the trick, too.

I would be a little wary of some PG movies from the 80's... a lot of those are the reason behind the PG-13 rating to begin with.

When the kids are 10 and under...it's a great time... and these days, maybe the only time, that they will sit down and watch the classics with wonder in their eyes. I say don't blow that moment.

Good call.

Another spooky/CGI-heavy (as opposed to blood/gore) PG-13 movie that I found highly entertaining was pre-LOTR Peter Jackson's The Frighteners.

Easily one of Michael J. Fox's best performances.

Special effects range from cute/funny...

...to scary/intense/foreboding...

...as well as "Busey" (deserved its own category).

Here's the trailer if you want to check it out.

No on Poltergeist! I'm sure if he sees it now he'll be petrified of clowns for a long time.

Thought the same thing. Good luck finding it though. Would have to buy a used VHS through Amazon or ebay or a "hard to find" DVD from another site (I.e., bootleg)

This is exactly what I was thinking when I saw the topic. It's Disney, so you know it's not gonna go too far. As a kid, I thought this was mildly scary. Betty Davis scares me.
