Talking the 1980s here. Which do you prefer? Obviously these movies and TV shows were just vehicles to sell toys, but they were still great.

I much prefer GI Joe The Movie though.

Both are pretty good actually.

Forced to choose, probably GI Joe.

GI Joe had Burgess Meredith while Transformers had Leonard Nimoy. That's probably a slight win by Transformers, but the GI Joe storyline of Cobra La and the secret bug people and their organic tech was way better.

All I know thinking about both is... Damn how much I miss the 80s. There was simply no better time to be a kid. My kids now still are entranced by most 80s pop culture for a reason.

Transformers get the edge, because of “The Touch” (GOAT movie song)

I really need to watch both of these again. I barely remember either of them.

Transformers had Orson Wells in his final performance. Unfortunately I never saw it until it came out on dvd around the time of the first Michael Bay movie. Always loved the GI Joe movie when I was a kid but Transformers was great too. Hard to pick a favorite.

“Why throw away your life so recklessly?”

“That’s a question you should ask yourself!”

Sick burn. Transformers by a hair.

I love em both. I loved Roadblock hanging out with Cobra Commander but Transformers wins by an inch.

GI Joe was a better movie, but the first scene where Autobots died freaked out 8 year old me. I remember being angry about the ones who were gone, and not wanting my parents to buy the "new" toys introduced, which obviously was the opposite of why Hasbro made the movie

I'm kind of surprised that people think GI Joe is the better movie. I haven't seen that one since I was like 6, so I can't properly judge it, but I don't remember much of it or anyone citing it in pop culture. Optimus Prime's death, Starscream's death, Galvatron, and Unicron are very memorable though. I also remember the opening sequence.

Maybe I'm wrong since I only remember flashes of the GI Joe movie, but I've been thinking for years Transformers was not only better, but also the best Transformers movie overall despite being animated.

I agree GI Joe Movie was never as big a deal in my circle as Transformers. Transformers was an intense movie compared to the TV show. I was stunned to see transformers actually die, Starscream get executed, a planet eating robot, and oh Optimus Prime got beat to death?!

I watched it again as an adult. It’s still intense. The music and animation are rad. The movie is a spellbinding time capsule for me and probably many guys who grew up in that time.

I haven't seen the GI Joe Movie in decades but watch the Transformers movie occasionally...the soundtrack from Transformers is just great. Stan Bush and Weird Al in the same movie?

Duke was supposed to die in the GI Joe movie, but was changed at the last minute to him going into a coma.

I love both movies for what they are. GI Joe never made it to the theaters because Transformers was considered a failure.

GI Joe never hit theaters, that I know of. I remember catching it on Channel 46 in Atlanta, one Saturday afternoon. They were a syndication partner of the weekday cartoon, so I imagine they got first crack at it.

Seeing the Autobots get their asses handed to them in the first 10 mins of Transformers was mind-blowing. That was 1986 Game of Thrones Episode 9-level "WTF?"

The movie intro

It truly is brilliant. I still get an adrenaline rush from it, especially the Cobra parts.

It didn't, because Transformers did so bad.
quote:

G.I. Joe: The Movie was intended as a theatrical release to be closely followed by The Transformers: The Movie. However, the G.I. Joe film encountered unexpected production delays which allowed the Transformers feature to be released first. Due to the poor box office performances of The Transformers: The Movie and My Little Pony: The Movie, G.I. Joe: The Movie was instead released direct-to-video as well as aired on television in syndication

Also, looks like Duke lived because Optimus Prime died
quote:

In the film's original script, Duke dies in battle after receiving a wound from a snake spear hurled by Serpentor. After this was written into the script, it inspired the death of the Autobot leader Optimus Prime in The Transformers: The Movie while both films were in production.[4] However, Optimus Prime's death sparked a severe backlash among both fans and parents, and Hasbro reversed their decision on allowing Duke's death
