I enjoy the Star Wars series, but I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan or anything. I’m somewhat intrigued by the fact that George Lucas created a universe that millions adore, and yet he is despised my many of its biggest fans. When did the hardcore fans start to turn on Lucas? Why didn’t he make any SW movies from 84-98? And is there still a small segment of SW junkies that defend Lucas? Or is he universally disliked by SW fans across the board?

The prequels lacked in some ways, but at least it was different and had some vision for a new universe...

I don’t hate Lucas, and I think most SW fans don’t either.

He's getting more popular with every Disney SW made.

Ok. Maybe I just overestimated the dislike for GL among SW fans.

He was waiting for Kenner/Hasbro to screw up their contract with him regarding the royalty fees. Figured there was no point in making movies if he can't make more money off of the toys.

I just made that up, but it's my theory and I'm sticking with it.

I loved American Graffitti but it's very hand held Linklater style of movie.

Then he did Star Wars and exploded into a cult of personality and toys and he didn't even direct his best movie.

Dude hit the lottery with Star Wars and Indy franchise let others really do everything.

His big thing for the consumer wasn't toys it was THX, home theater sound systems.

He jumped the shark when he thought Jar Jar Binks was a good idea. His family probably sat him down and said let Disney and Rian Johnson take the hit now Pops; take the money and run...

I'd love for him to make more no-Star Wars films. He was a great director and writer.

JarJar Binks is the Sith equivalent of Yoda and the mastermind behind the entire prequels and the puppet master behind Palpatine.

I think it wasn’t so much the story, it was the execution of the prequels. The acting, for the most part (except for Obi-Wan), was horrible.

And he had just about fixed everything with the last one until “Noooooooooo!”

By all accounts, A New Hope was a mess that was saved in editing. Lucas didn't direct Empire nor Jedi. The prequels were kind of a kick in the pants to fans who expected the same magic as the original trilogy.

Lucas directed two good films in his career - A New Hope and American Graffiti.

Lucas is the mastermind that created and controlled the Star Wars EU. I could be wrong but that universe has more books written about it and more video games than any other universe. That is just talking about quantity.

Lucas's masterpiece is the EU and the Original Trilogy

You must be young and oblivious. Jar Jar sucks for adults, but he was a huge money maker for Lucas. Huge money maker. Do you have any idea how much money Lucas made from jar jar merchandise?

Others wrote the EU (which was wiped out when Disney came along). Lucasfilm approved all EU material, but Lucas was not the driving force behind the EU.
