Did you ever hear the tragedy of George Lucas The Wise? It’s not a story Star Wars fans would tell you. George Lucas was a director so powerful and so wise he could use his vision to influence the studios to create film merchandising. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught Disney everything he knew, then Disney bought him out. Ironic. He could save others from Disney but not himself.

The people that hate Lucas will be the first ones crying the day he dies. He deserves flack for Jar Jar and the cartoon prequels but he still is a masterful ideas guy. BTW, I liked Howard the Duck.

Almost 2 years since the OP, does anyone have a different opinion now on those questions? How Lucas is viewed by the hardcore Star Wars fans is still interesting to me.

I think it's because he changed the original three movies and made it impossible to see them original style.

There's a torrent out there... I can't remember what it's called.... somebody "undid" all of the "improvement" George Lucas made.

Technology and he was still tinkering with the OT.

I don't think any of the old fans hated him beyond hating his constant (for film) edits to the movies, some of which were benign or unneeded. Others were just awful, like replacing the shaw ghost.

And while the prequel trilogy sucked it was at least fertile ground for writers and artists to play in, just like the OT was.

It's the DeSpecialized Edition.

It's still a Frankenstein of the laserdisc and a few other sources iirc.

That's it. Harmy's DeSpecialized.

It's like a 20gb download.

George Lucas is a creative visionary and a technical visionary.

He isn’t a good writer or director.

He created the SW universe with ANH and he deserves all of the credit that comes with that.

However, it was ESB that made SW what it is and he neither wrote or directed it.

That’s why ESB is the incredible movie that it is.

He didn’t direct RToJ but he has a writing credit on it and the word has always been that Lucas forced in the Ewoks which is the weak link of the movie. The original concept was that the Wookies were being used as slave labor to build the second Death Star and teamed up with the Rebellion which would have made a good movie maybe as good as ESB.

George wanted Teddy bears.

He wrote and directed the prequels which was bad form. He didn’t appreciate his limitations and made two terrible films and one barely passable film.

He then sold to Disney.

Star Wars has been a huge part of my life and I thank George.

I just wish he could have gotten out of his own way.

Lucas is kind of a prick, which is surprising considering how light and fun most of the Star Wars stuff is.
