If he didn't frick up the original trilogy and bury the theatrical versions I wouldn't hate him at all
Posted on 1/19/18 at 2:40 pm to RidiculousHype
I think the prevailing narrative with people that hate him is that he caught lightning in a bottle with a good idea, the people around him made it successful, and he played little to no role in Star Wars becoming the cultural icon It is.
I disagree with this wholeheartedly. His weakest spot is probably his directing, and he knows this. He only got stuck with the prequels because no one else would do it. Honesty it was a no win situation.

I think it became hate when he went back and added CGI and changed scenes in the original trilogy. Lucas is creative and can create an imaginative universe that captures peoples devotion. He is NOT a good filmmaker and can't convey his vision to others. It helps to think of him as some autistic genius that can solve abstract equations but can't communicate with people.

It's like Corch O and Les Miles.
Everyone admits it was time for Les to move on and we all thanked him. Then we got the Corch and a ton of folks are like damn sure do miss what we had.
Same thing. Time for GL to go but damn sure do miss what we had.

Jar Jar sucks for adults, but he was a huge money maker for Lucas. Huge money maker.

Why didn’t he make any SW movies from 84-98?

He was waiting for Kenner/Hasbro to screw up their contract with him regarding the royalty fees. Figured there was no point in making movies if he can't make more money off of the toys.
I just made that up, but it's my theory and I'm sticking with it.

American Graffiti is still his best and most complete film.

I loved American Graffitti but it's very hand held Linklater style of movie.
Then he did Star Wars and exploded into a cult of personality and toys and he didn't even direct his best movie.
Dude hit the lottery with Star Wars and Indy franchise let others really do everything.
His big thing for the consumer wasn't toys it was THX, home theater sound systems.
remember reading an article where he lamented the lack of technology in the movie theaters, esp audio ... think it was probably after V, but can't remember ... honestly don't think he wanted to make a movie till the technology of showing the film caught up ...

most of us don't think of jar jar as a character ...
we absolutely view him as an abomination ...

The sad thing is he was such a fan of CGI that he overloaded the prequels ....but it was the unique combination of live action and special effects in the original trilogy that really gave the movies a unique feel. Too much CGI makes everything cartoony.
I really liked the way they went back to the original feel of Star Wars in Rogue One....and the others too...even if they writing sucked.

I enjoy the Star Wars series, but I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan or anything. I’m somewhat intrigued by the fact that George Lucas created a universe that millions adore, and yet he is despised my many of its biggest fans. When did the hardcore fans start to turn on Lucas? Why didn’t he make any SW movies from 84-98? And is there still a small segment of SW junkies that defend Lucas? Or is he universally disliked by SW fans across the board?
we don't hate him ... we just hate losing the feeling of the originals, even if we don't like the ewoks ... i think he went too cgi/special effects with the prequels, instead of concentrating on characters and story ... and reducing the 'force' to a molecular presence in anakin's blood was a horrible decision, imo ...

He fricked up the original movies by adding a bunch of CGI bullshite.
The prequels were a mess from JarJar to whiny arse Hayden Christiansen cast as Vader, he made young Vader look like a complete pussy.

A lot of it was this. I remember he also spent time watching other films being made behind the scenes, including BTTF 2 and 3. After ILM created the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park he knew that technology had at least caught up to what he was wanting to do.

Did anyone here ever see THX 1138? I bought it at target one day but never watched it.

c'mon ... no one looked at the originals and thought the 3 minute touch-ups with cgi screwed anything up ...

Yeah, it's probably his 3rd best film behind A New Hope and American Grafitti.
And American Grafitti is a great film. So I give him credit for that.
I don't know if he wrote the script...I doubt it because the diaglogue is great and Lucas sucks arse at dialogue.
That scene with Toad trying to buy liqour is one of the most iconic scenes that it has been copied countless times.
Superbad totally copied it to a tee. Just ripped it off with no apologies because the AG scene is so iconic it's basically in the public domain.

George is a creative genius. But George needs oversight. Star Wars was great because George couldn’t do everything he wanted to because he didn’t have the clout. So he made an amazing movie. Same with Indy. Those are still very much Spielberg movies

The unprecedented and painstaking attention to detail with the effects (and the creativity involved with creating them) in Star Wars (A New Hope for you youngsters) is what skyrocketed his career. All those intricate models were fantastic.
American Graffiti was an iconic film that spawned the Happy Days shows (a major part of my childhood with Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, and then Mork and Mindy with the emergence of Robin Williams). About half the cast of Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley were in Graffiti, and Happy Days incorporated Arnold's Drive-in and a lot of the setting.
Raiders of the Lost Ark was a fantastic adventure. Absolutely didn't hurt that he got Harrison Ford to star in it, although I think it was intended for Tom Selleck.
George really went overboard with CGI later; it made his job easier as a creator, but it detracted from the charm because it was too easy.
