And personally, I'm not sure it's really a bad thing. Perhaps she had to be burned to be his Nissa Nissa. Perhaps she survives and we learn that her Grey Scale provided some sort of protection against fire. Perhaps him sacrificing Shireen to the only god proven as being real so far will enable him to crush the Boltons, rally the North, and form the only army that has any intention of fighting the REAL battle one day. Jesus Christ people, this story is far from over. How can all of you be reacting this way already? Just wait and see what happens. For book readers, a lot of you in this thread sure don't seem to have a grasp of how this series works.
What Stannis did was just downright evil and selfish. Plus I don't really think he believes in it. Not going to root for a guy who burns his own daughter to death.

I never understood why people were fans of his anyway.

He absolutely stood there and watched? Did any of you even listen to the scene with Shireen before they burned her? Do any of you actually GET Stannis?? He sticks to his guns, NO MATTER WHAT. He believes he is AA chosen and that he HAS to do this to fulfill his destiny. He clearly explained his reasoning in that scene. I swear some of you are so thick...
Stannis' reasoning is absolute bullshite and he knows it. Stannis says he only does things because of duty, but no, he does it for power. He doesn't really believe in the Lord of Light, he's only doing this just in case. Stannis talks a big game of honor and selflessness, but all he really is is a liar.

Nothing changed for me in terms of Stannis after last night. He's crazy as shite, but he's consistent. Nothing ranks above his claim, in his mind. He would kill Selyse (frick her, by the way), the Red Woman, Davos, etc., etc. He's always been that way, and it continued last night. It didn't shock me one iota. That's always been Stannis.
Also, echo the person in this thread who brought up their disappointment in The Unsullied. They've dropped in the power rankings tremendously in the past month.

I disagree. I think his whole speech to Shireen proved that he truly believed that he is Azor Ahai. He basically thought that his destiny was more important to the greater good than his love for his daughter. Now that is still extremely messed up thinking, but I think it proves how much Mel has brainwashed him since early on in his story (plus the White Walker accounts probably also swayed him).

So in the book do you think Mel will burn Shireen to resurrect Jon Snow?

No. The reason for the sacrifice will be the same, just a venue change.

No. I think Stannis is going to get bogged down in the winter conditions (kind of like he is on the show), and will send word to Mel to sacrifice her. One of the released WoW chapters seems to hint that Stannis' army might be in dire straights. The only difference will be that Stannis probably won't be there to witness it in person.

Stannis still has Theon chained up. He also has Asha. Their dad proclaimed himself as king of the Iron Islands.

How can you say all of this, OML? Have you even been paying attention to Stannis?
Exactly! This scene was RIGHT BEFORE the burning for a reason- so that we understand that he truly believes he's doing what is necessary for the greater good. And just like some other poster said, Stannis has been completely consistent throughout the entire series. OF COURSE he'd burn Shireen if it means better chances of winning the next battle, amassing more men and land, and better preparing for what's to come. He believes he's AA and he's following the prophecy as such.
More evidence that proves you haven't been paying attention:
Melisandre to Stannis
Stannis to Davos
Anyone who is surprised and outraged by Stannis' actions last night simply DOES NOT understand him or Game of Thrones. This IS NOT Lord of the Rings or other fantasy stories where good triumphs evil in clean ways. The "good guys" in this story make hard decisions and huge sacrifices because that's what real life is like. Get with the program, people. Things are only going to continue to get bad before the "end" of the story.

quote:
This war has just begun. It will last for years. Thousands will die at your command. You will betray the men serving you, you will betray your family, you will betray everything you once held dear...and it will all be worth it, because you are the Son of Fire, you are the Warrior of Light. You will sweep aside this pretender and that one; you will be king.
Stannis to Davos
quote:
I never asked for this crown. Gold is cold and heavy on the head, but so long as I am the king, I have a duty … If I must sacrifice one child to the flames to save a million from the dark … Sacrifice … is never easy, Davos. Or it is no true sacrifice.

Everyone freaking out over Shireen's burning and claiming that the show has jumped the shark...really? What did you think you were watching here? Did you forget Ned's beheading? The red wedding? The Mountain torturing people or Sansa's constant abuse? Bad things happen to good people on this show. GRRM has said himself many times in interviews, good and evil is subjective for many of his characters (Joffrey, Ramsay, Mountain notwithstanding).
This is the Song of Ice and Fire. There are Others (ice) and the Red God and Dragons (fire). The Others kill everyone and raise zombie armies. The Red God demands human sacrifice by fire and dragons eat kids. The lines are blurred here. If you want Prince Valiant swooping in to save the princess, go watch Cinderella.
The scene was hard to watch, but that just speaks to how far Stannis has fallen. It wasn't even the worst daughter burning scene on TV! Google Sons of Anarchy S5E1. I liked the episode and can't wait to see where D&D take it. Yall all acting like a bunch of sweet summer children in here.

Again, get with the program. This is how ASOIAF/GOT works. Bad shite happens. No one is completely good.
And I got news for ya, this season is most likely going to end with Jon being stabbed. Buckle up.

Thank you, STM! I seriously don't understand how people can be outraged by this kind of stuff at this point. How do y'all not "get it" by now?

god damn mother fricker I accidentally opened this thread instead of the Hodor thread.
the shite on the page before is why we will still need one for future seasons BTW. If we are getting rid of any thread it should be the middle ground, not the Hodor.

I hated The Sparrows in the books..but after seeing what Stannis is capable of I am 100% Team Seven Pointed Star.
May the dirty, gruby, unwashed masses take control of the seven kingdoms and anoint a true king to rule all.
New Crackpot Theory: The church learns about the wildlings settling in The Gift. They send envoys up there, the wildings find religion (or a new one) in the Seven. The High Septon then has more army than he could ever hope for and starts wrecking shop. General is our "gravedigger", he fights Robert Strong to condemn Cersei to death. The story end up being Old Gods (white walkers) vs. the New (all the seven kingdoms united under the church).
BOOM!
