He was bleeding out of his fricking eyes. The Heimlich wasn't going to save him after the first cough and if she were in on it she would have known that. She also looked and sounded awfully satisfied in the preview for episode 3.

No, yes, and yes. The line of succession through a house is only as strong as that house's ability to protect their claim that their house's line is the proper one. It's kinda the whole story and how Danerys ties in. If you want to go way back, she's got the rightful claim because she's the last Targaryen. When she returns with dragons, there's going to be an interesting conversation about who really should be sitting.
But, from a standpoint of who was king when we entered the world, Stannis has the legitimate claim and everyone else is trying to prove they're stabby enough to solidify their claim. Right now, the Lannisters are stabby enough.

The Targaryens had the throne before Robert and he gained it by conquest. The Lannisters already have the whole damn Kingdom, they just have to include the name Baratheon so people think they're holding it honestly. If they think Joffrey/Tommen are legitimate Baratheons then they'll stay loyal but if they find out they're incest Lannister babies then they'll all rally to Stannis since he is last in Robert's line.

But Aerys had two children. The blood of kings ran through them, not Robert.
EDIT: Which is where Danerys' claim comes from, adding one person to the Crazy Cavalcade of Bloodlines who claims the throne. She's got dragons, though, so if she can ever cross the damned sea, happy fun time begins.
