I don't think it was the girls, although, I'm not positive. Doesn't seem plausible.

It should be some other baby. Not Gilly's.

He's producing and writing for the show as well. I think he'll tell them if they need to keep a character in there. JKR did for the HP series, don't see why Martin wouldn't.
That kind of control HAS to be expressed in writing. JKR's contract and level of control was unprecedented due to the already huge popularity of the books, even before the first movie was made. I have no idea what GRRM's contract looks like, but given the hyper-vulgarization (not that I'm complaining) that I've seen so far, as well as the character deviations, I'm thinking his level of control is not as high.

Ghost looked great. They have done a good job with the direwolves.

Another excellent episode but I feel sorry for anyone who hasn't read the books trying to follow all these story arcs.
And yes, Melisandre getting nailed on the table was primo.

We learned a few things last night but our most important lesson has to be………..
Never complain in a brothel, no telling what is around the next door….
(Everyone should already know...NO KISSING)

It's a bit daunting at times but they are doing a great job with it. Dont really find myself asking "ok now what the hell is going on here again?" My biggest problem is trying to remember the city names and the relative geography of everything

He's literally writing an episode. I'd imagine his pull is quite strong. If a character is almost irreplaceable, they'll listen to him. Seriously why wouldn't they?

Better not slow him down in writing Winds of Winter. If he takes 6 years to put out the next book.

Well, he already wrote Ep 9 of Season 2 awhile back, and he hadn't planned on starting WoW until early this year.
He will take forever. According to rumors I've heard he still hasn't even started on it beyond the fragments he wrote while writing Dance.
Also, he has gone on record and said he doesn't mind changes. He has worked on TV and understands things need to change to adapt to screen.

You're right with this. On the commentary for one of the episodes in the first season, I think it's Benioff or Weiss is talking about how smart Martin was to hold on to the rights for as long as he did and let it get as popular as it did. That way he could say how much control he wanted over it when the show was made. The guy had already been involved with tv production back in the early 90s with the Beauty and the Beast show, so I'd like to think he knows what he is doing.

Writing this from my tablet, so referencing all of the questions is a bit difficult.
The baby: NOT Gilly's.
Renly is much more loved by people than the hard-assed Stannis even though Stannis is the more rigthtful claimant.
The books didn't go into as much detail about the sex, but most of it was there (like the chick on the boat with the bad teeth).
The bonedance between Stannis was hinted at but not confirmed until much later in the book version.
******spoilerish but not really******
Melisandre was brought in by Stannis' wife who evetually was able to sway Stannis into heeding Melisandre. This seems to have been glossed over in the series due to time constraints and pacing needs.

So far the story of the Watch is playing out exactly as in the book.

The fact that he writes episodes does not mean that he has the kind of control over the final product that JKR had. I doubt he has the power to simply overrule their decisions, and he certainly has no power to do anything if it isn't expressed in writing.
I don't mean to suggest that they just ignore him and do whatever they want. I'm simply saying that the kind of control JKR had is very rare (unprecedented, in her case), and really, only given to authors of books that are already hugely popular.
In fact, many studios shun involvement by the writer when it comes to film production. So many make the mistake of merely transcribing their book, which often doesn't work well in film.

That really hasn't been a problem thus far. I don't recall names all that well but I have a fairly good understanding of what's taking place. I doubt if I'd be watching with the same sense of anticipation had had I read the books. This show has me hooked.

I don't think there is a scene in the book that shows Jon watchin Craster ditch the boys, but yeah that is what we are told happens to them.

If HBO only contracted the first season, then he could easily have negotiated more control

If it helps, some ppl may want to bookmark HBO's viewer guide
It has maps, house/character info to go w/ headshots

Not sure what you mean by "contracted" in this sense - his involvement as a writer/producer or just the right to the books themselves? I'd have a hard time believing the studio optioned only the first book, so whatever control whomever has over what has possibly already been determined, whether GRRM is writing/producing or not.
Maybe he really does have that kind of control, and merely capitulates often. Who knows, but the level of deviation suggests otherwise, to me, anyway.
