Watching Season One all over again before the premiere of Season Two has been a blessing. I already knew the names of all the major players but by watching Season One again, I was reminded of all the minor players as well as various events that I had forgotten. I am having no problem following the people and events of Season Two and I have never read the books.

Not sure what you mean by "contracted" in this sense - his involvement as a writer/producer or just the right to the books themselves? I'd have a hard time believing the studio optioned only the first book, so whatever control whomever has over what has possibly already been determined, whether GRRM is writing/producing or not. Maybe he really does have that kind of control, and merely capitulates often. Who knows, but the level of deviation suggests otherwise, to me, anyway.
He doesn't have total control. He told them not to kill a character last season but they did so anyway.
I don't GRRM was real happy about it either. Regardless the changes made (other than that one) have been slight and I don't mind them. A book can not translate perfectly to a tv screen.

I have no idea what rights were signed, but if it's anything like the contracts for the actors then it's usually for a single season. If the show hits well enough then the studio either has an option to extend a given actor's contract for a pre-specified period or the actor can re-negotiate (like the crews of Friends, Cheers, Seinfeld, Sopranos, etc). It may be completely different for written work, I was just tossing it out there as a possibility.

Me too. It isn't that difficult to follow.

Pono I think???
Cant remember the name but it was the guy Jorah killed outside the tent when Dany went into labor.

In the council meeting at King's Landing, they mentioned that there was a 5th king north of the wall. It's not the guy that the Knight's Watch patrol is staying with, is it?

Thought we have yet to see him, there is a king who has apparently united all of the wildlings, north of The Wall.

No they are referring to Mance Rayder, The King Beyond The Wall.
One of the reasons Jon and the rest of the Nights Watch is beyond the wall right now.

I have a little experience with this, and it is much different than actors' contracts. The first thing they do is option the rights to the source material (in this case, the books) and they usually option the entire body of work. When JKR made her first deal, they optioned all of the existing books, as well as all future HP books. Again, it's hard for me to believe that they would option one book at a time.
But like you, I have no problem with it. No book, no matter how good, can translate directly to film with no alteration. It's just the different nature of the two media.

We haven't seen him then, right? No need to explain any further. TIA

Don't think it's Pono because I think they said he might have been the one responsible for scalping one of her bloodriders.
Maybe it was Jhaqo?

Apparently the buddy of Khal Drogo that Jorah Mormont kills in the TV series in front of the tent is supposed to play a decent sized role in the 6th book when it comes out.
He was only cut across the face with the most non-lethal looking wound I've ever seen one hit kill someone.
He could come back with a big arse scar on his cheek. But...that's assuming we get 6 seasons. This show is mad popular...but you never know.
