A tremendous amount of backstory and insight into character's motivations, as well has having absolutely no knowledge of quite a few more minor characters that become significantly more important.

So season 1 ended where book 1 ended, as in no gaps would be there? I did the same thing with LOTR. I watched the first movie, then read books 2&3. I ended up going back and reading book 1 a year or two later

There are also quite a few flashbacks, dream sequences, etc that are completely left out of the show that are important later.

It would be a massive mistake to skip it. And the height of pathetic laziness.

I'm going to buy them today but I was on the fence about whether I wanted to reach the height of pathetic laziness.

The height of pathetic laziness is being too lazy to be lazy, and thus you purchase the books and read the first one. Congratulations on reaching your goal

Why were some people not digging the finale? I thought it was a great way to end it. The dragon scene was cool, Joffrey is a mean little fricker, Lannisters apparently only frick each other (Cersei and Lancel scene), King of North scene was cool, and it all setup to make for a kick arse season 2.

Looking forward to seeing how Daenerys starts fricking people up with her following (and dragons).

Not to mention the dudes on the wall setting out to get busy with the white walkers.

IMO...........

Season 2

had the previous episode not ended with Ned going PEZ dispenser on us, I'm sure it'd wouldve been a bit better received

but when you compare the two endings, the dragon thing was a bit of a letdown, and frankly alot of us kinda saw that coming

Had they ended season 1 with Ned's death scene, I think the hype going into S02 would've been a tidal wave

Imagine if for the show they went from Ned's death scene right to the birth of the dragons, all in the season finale.

eta: they could have had Drogo die in episode 9 to end that one. I know that doesn't follow the book order, but the books jump around a lot anyway.

I can't remember reading anything about that. I think it was just added fluff for the show just like Maester Pycell and the whore.

Might want to throw a spoiler warning on that before you know who starts another thread on the help board.

Yeah, for the way tv shows are formatted, this would have been a great idea to get anticipation higher for season 2.

Ah ok. I am around page 200 in Clash of Kings right now and haven't gotten to that yet. Good to know it wasn't just added for the show I am amazed at the job HBO has done in sticking to the books. It really speaks for the quality writing and I think the authors chapter format really lends itself to a TV adaptation.

I couldn't reach new heights of laziness as the book store didn't have the second volume in stock, so I went with Game of Thrones and will trudge through it before the next.

Amazon had all 4 books for $20 a couple of weeks ago. I'm not sure if they still do.
