The scene where the two couples have the awkward dinner together is truly a master class. Go back and watch it line by line, frame by frame. There's so many things going on at once. "Why wouldn't you just take the battery out of the cellphone? Battle's over."
Also, the characters are not 2-dimensional. Mila could have easily been a cardboard cutout. Instead, she has significant agency. Even Aldous isn't just a complete douche - he actually is a nice guy with a blindspot. He legit congratulates Peter the morning after he bags Mila - completely sincere.

So spot on. The only character you really dislike in the film is Bell, but even she has her moments, and ultimately she reveals herself as just an insecure girl coming to the realization that her career and her looks and status are almost over...and then she just let the purest thing in her life go because of her behavior.
You're right on Aldous also. Even in other highly highly successful comedies made by the some of the most talented guys ever, he would have been a cartoon character and a vile human being just for the audience to turn on him... But he wasn't.
That part could've easily been played by Shasha Baron Cohen, and he would've been a revolting one dimensional, yet funny character, but clearly Segal and Apatow had some true genius stuff working in the development of the script.
In fact, I'd say it's on of the best written films of recent memory.

I'd pay to watch that Dracula musical.

I haven’t been around here too long but have there been other examples of a thread causing pretty much the entire board to do a re-watch?
I’ve enjoyed this way too much.
We need to find more common ground to do this with more movies

I had to do a rewatch last night after seeing this thread. I love this movie and it holds up incredibly well. The key is the bits of subtle humor, especially the dialogue between Hill and Brand. This scene always makes me laugh.
Aldous Snow:
If I have just one sip of wine, by the end of the evening I'll be, like, rimming waiters for their tips, just to get me hands on a rock. You know what I mean? Nasty
Matthew Van Der Wyk:
(jokingly) I heard that! (comes over)
Aldous Snow:
Oh- hey, what's up, man.
Matthew Van Der Wyk:
How are you enjoying your vegetable medley?
Aldous Snow:
It's- it's mundane.
Matthew Van Der Wyk:
(not realizing that Aldous was criticizing the food negatively) It is mundane. It's great, I know.

It’s different watching HIMYM now after getting eye raped by Marshall’s full frontal several times.

Kemo. Same guy. He got mauled, to say the least in that fight. Glad he found acting.

Top 5 comedy of the last 25 years IMO.
It’s basically perfect.

I use Aldous’ insult to Jonah Hill’s character all the time when someone asks me if I have done something: “you know I was going to, but then I just carried on living my life.”

Never seen it. I'll add it to the list. Not sure why?

Once again Paul Rudd is the funniest part of the movie in a small supporting role.

Let me just say that if God was a city planner, he would not put a playground next to a sewage system.

I guess I'm gonna be that guy. Or at least out of the mainstream board opinion on this one.
I watched it yesterday before I noticed the thread on this board. I thought it was ok to pretty good. But I didn't find it as good as I had remembered.
I just don't find sad sack characters like Jason Segal played in this one that watchable. I mean the guy moved from nailing one extremely hot chick, to getting a decent string of randoms to nailing another hot chick. And he was still all "woe is me".
I did think it was funny in parts and I thought there were some good performances. Russel Brand and Bill Hader did good work, Paul Rudd was ok and Mila Kunis added some depth to her character (or the writing did). But overall, I wasn't really blown away.
Plus, it seems like I remember when this thing originally aired, they had a few more scenes of Kristen Bell getting nailed in different ways.

Man it actually makes me happy how much the board loves this movie. It’s always been my wife and I’s favorite comedy throughout our entire relationship.

Watched it last night (because of this thread)
Mila Kunis is insanely hot. Like, good Lord.

Yep, my only complaint is that it looked like she was sporting an inverted arse in the scene where they hike to the cliff.
