Kevin from The Office is a great example of this. From slow witted accountant to the last season where he believed an infant child bought him an iTunes gift card.

early in the series it's revealed he won a WSOP bracelet and he's a poker expert.

Kevin's character is gullible. Which is why the WSOP/betting angle was so funny. Love the Ep where he goes golfing with Jim and Andy.

Look a Eric Matthews from Boy Meets World.

That was a weird one. With Kevin and Joey, they went from dumb to retarded. Eric wasn't really dumb in high school. He was a lazy kid that was decently sharp when he put forth effort. He also did decent with girls. When he got to college, her morphed into a clown.

Joey, Phoebe, Ross and Monica in the last half of the series or so all became over-the-top parodies of their initial characters.

I always point to the episode when Chandler and Phoebe tease hooking up to prolong the Monica/Chandler secret and their relationship becomes officialy "public" by the end of the episode as the dividing line between the two eras of the show.

The Chandler character changed for good at that point, and the other characters I referenced above really lost focus on being characters and became caricatures. Rachel is the only one that never waivered much but she was always portrayed as the most "straight man" of the group from a comedy perspective.

All of that said, first 2-3 seasons define the mid 90s for me. The music, the references. Just everything about it.

I really liked them all except for the last season or two, which I hated. They really jumped the shark with the whole Joey and Rachel arc and as many have stated, the devolution of Joey's character.

watched an episode on a flight yesterday.

quote:

Ross struggles to name all 50 states in a game. Joey compromises Rachel's chances with her crush, Tag, during Thanksgiving dinner. Phoebe sneaks a dog into the apartment, making Chandler extremely nervous.

Chandler hates dogs

Episode aired 23 November 2000

couple of things that stood out:
the entire cast was clearly "over" doing the show and were going through the motions

Joey was actually pretty funny, but Phoebe and Ross were literal retards

Monica at the end looked (and acted) at least 5-7 years older than the rest of the cast. oddly Lisa Kudrow was actually the oldest of the Friends

Rachel had the best writing, but Aniston seemed to be representing the audience in that she constantly had a "do you believe this shite" look on her face. of course the hook was Rachel looking for love in all the wrong places and wanting to hook up with her assistant

ross went for his usual episode arc
First smarmy and snarky, to pathetic, to angry, to really pathetic to somewhat endearing at the end

I will always stand by my statement that Chandler Bing in the first couple seasons of that show is on the Mount Rushmore of sitcom characters.

How many shows (especially comedies) can you really say had more than 4-5 seasons of quality writing/acting? It's not a long list.

If more shows were made with a set season limit in the 3-5 range we'd probably have fond memories of a lot more shows.

That gif made me think of this. The Bet episode is right up there with any sitcom episode of any show that I've ever watched. It is pinnacle friends. There are a few episodes of shows that come to mind when I think of great episodes. These are just a few:

1. Bet episode from Friends
2. Master of your domain episode from Seinfeld
3. Paintball episode of Community
4. Gas Crisis episode of IASIP

There are like 4 or 5 episodes of The Office that I think are the in the top 10 episodes of any comedy ever.

At it's absolute peak, it's untouchable IMO. Seinfeld had a better run and better consistency and as fricking hilarious as it was, I'm not sure there was ever a scene as funny as the CPR scene or the Dinner Party scene in The Office.

I would bet a lot of Friends viewers would put this as a favorite episode. It was easily the best, IMO.

That's the episode that has the "moo point" line in it. Which I find hilarious. That's something a goof would say.

I do love that line. I use it sometimes IRL, but then feel like I need to explain myself so people don't think I'm an idiot.

You are right. I should have had The Dinner Party episode in my list.

The simple English Trifle cracks me up just thinking about it, as does Ross in the armadillo suit which causes Chandler to refer to him ans strange turtle guy.

On a somewhat unrelated but related note, David Schwimmer as Greenzo in 30 Rock is one of my favorite moments of that show.
