I have been re-watching (for about the 10th time) Cheers, and just made it to the finale. I'm a full grown man, but it still has an impact on me. I think shows like this were an "EVENT" back before everyone had DVR and streaming really stick with you. I was just a 16 year old kid when Cheers went off the air, so Thursday night TV was still something we did as a family all those years.

Thoughts? Any shows like this for you?

I was watching Newhart on youtube awhile back. Once it hit it's groove in season 3, it dawned on me that there was still 100+ episodes left, which was great. Get to the last season and it's like "Well, that's still around 10 hrs of new episodes."

I knew how it was going to end but really didn't want to get there because the cast/show was so enjoyable.

KOTH is another one that I didn't want to see end.

I always loved the finale of Parks and Rec. The Scrubs one gets me every time too.

Even by the time of the Cheers finale people had VCRS.

The true events were earlier: MASH, Who Shot JR? (not a finale I know), and my own all time favorite show, the finale of which was the most watched series episode in history until JR got shot:

Six Feet Under

probably one of the most impactful series endings.

breaking bad just cuz i didnt want the show to end but did. i think it ended as it should have.

Fraiser, between his own show and starting in cheers thats a helluva long time to get to know a character. So not so much loved the last episode buy the ending in whole.

“Justified” ended well … but I didn’t love it since it meant the show was over.

+1 on Parks and Rec

Black Sails is probably my all time favorite send off. Especially the very last scene.
The Leftovers
The Newsroom
I liked The Wire ending more than most
Vice Principles
Broadchurch
The Killing

Still racking my brain, I know im missing some of my favorites.

Yeah, Six Feet Under is the best. I still watch that final montage every once in a while. Just stunningly beautiful and powerful to the very last frame.

Another one along similar lines was Parenthood.

I also loved the Eastbound and Down finale, though it obviously doesn't pack the same emotional punch.

A lot of the ones named so far are my votes. I'll throw in Fringe as well.

House, M.D. for me. My family watched that show every week for what seemed like my entire childhood. The final season ended my freshman year at LSU. I watched the last episode in the LSU library. Kinda was one of those moments you realize your childhood is over and time for something different.

We recorded the 2 1/2 hour MASH finale on VHS. I think I watched it 100 times. I was in 5th grade when that finale aired and people went back to school the net day crying over it.

It held the ratings record for decades, which was finally broken by the Saints v. Colts SB game.

Cheers was sad and kind of uneventful. Sam revealing that he's bald was big though.

I especially enjoyed the series finales of Mad Men and The Shield, as both saw their main characters remain true to who they were for the entire run of both series. There were no epiphanies or changes of heart, just Don being Don and Vic being Vic until the end.

In my view, that's much more true to human nature than watching a character's personality do a 180.

The only things that I can remember about the Cheers finale are Sam turning off the lights and the cast being wasted on The Tonight Show later that night.
