Not being a top 3 Hanks movie isn't really a legit gripe, but I agree. There's nothing I didn't like about the movie. It was REALLY good, but something was a bit off. I think that they should have gone a touch darker. Jude Law's character was a bit cartoony. Mendes did a really good job with it, but it feels like a movie that someone like the Coens could have made one of the GOATs.

I never had a problem with that 3rd act. I get why people might find it a little jarring genre-wise, but it was pretty damned relevant thematically. It wasn't gratuitous -- the ideas and themes introduced earlier played out in the 3rd act in a manner that created an actual synthesis, bringing them into sharp relief.
(Keeping the details intentionally vague since at least one person here hasn't seen the movie yet)

"Collateral"
"Watchmen" (if you're an enraged comic purist, that's fine, but I will still maintain it was a damned good movie, especially the Director's Cut, and just on the brink of being an all-time great movie)
"Identity" (Good movie, but just misses the mark with some needless cliche)
and I know this movie has some ardent fans here, but I'm going to nominate "Her" because it was a good, dispassionate editor away from being great. They needed somebody willing to cut it down to size so it didn't just ramble so badly.
Edit: I want include "The Hudsucker Proxy," but I'm not sure whether it's on the verge of greatness or just criminally underappreciated.

I may get a lot of shite for this but honestly: Terminator 3.
I actually liked the plot...the T-X was a little overpowered, but I really liked the fact that Judgment Day was inevitable. The action scenes were also really good.
My biggest gripe with the movie was the acting of the two main characters. Edward Furlong wasn't able to reprise his role because he was a druggie...but John Conner was supposed to be a druggie in the movie. I know you don't want to enable the guy, but he could act circles around Nick Stahl. And Claire Danes was just so fricking bad.
You get a better lead actor and actress and maybe dial down the T-X's powers a little and I think you have a pretty damn good movie. Instead it was awful.

But it did capture the spirit of the book series very well, and most of the story was straight from the books, though it was from several books. The story isn't the standard hollywood structure with a definite climax because that's the way the books are, a journey rather than a destination. I really wish they'd made more movies and that's probably what they had in mind with the ending. But it barely made any money and meanwhile the idiot Pirates franchise was raking in the cash.

I know some of mine have been listed, but here are some that came to mind..
And spoilers, obviously.
Sunshine - No doubt. Last 20 minutes or so were just weird and completely anti the flow of the movie.
Interstellar - Really liked the movie, but there is just something missing for me at the end. Basically, it tried too much IMO.
Jeepers Creepers - First half was legit scary/creepy. Second half was overly campy and fairly stupid. Such a great concept too.
Sinister - Really liked the movie until the reveal at the end that it was the kids doing the work. That made it completely unbelievable for me and all but ruined it. And it wasn't even that the demon was doing the work via the kids' bodies...it was literally the kids. Impossible.
The Devil Inside - Easily one of the best possession movies ever....right up until literally the last 2 minutes or so. It's like they didn't know how to end it so they made up something completely weird and stupid. And it ruined what could've been an amazing movie.
The Departed - Fantastic movie up until the end when everybody just randomly gets killed off. It felt like a copout of an ending for me, and it made what would've been a truly awesome movie just "really good" for me.
I've never gotten the hate for Contact. That's a pretty great movie, and the ending with the alien contact makes perfect sense within the context of the movie.
Also, Master and Commander is being mentioned??? That movie is fricking awesome.

That movie was riiiiiiight there on the verge of being great. Director's Cut especially.
Some of these others being mentioned were good flicks but still a decent ways off from being great. Kingdom of Heaven almost made it.
Contact? I put Contact in the same category as Sphere. Great sci-fi books that I LOVED, but films that are just terrible.

Yup. To me, Interstellar is just like a Stephen King book. Great ride for 90% of its course with a bad ending that tries too hard, overexplains, and oversimplifies.

I really enjoyed it up until the Matt Damon betrayal twist. That movie was ding perfectly fine without the sudden insertion of a random human villain (same goes for the brother turning into a douche for some reason). Also didn't care much for their interpretation of what a Black Hole is like on the inside and the weird Halo-knock off they were on at the end.
Really, really, good movie up until those points.

Stranger Than Fiction. I think, had she killer of Will Ferrell's character, it would have been received completely different.

Nightcrawler. It traffics a bit too much as an expose in how local news works, which is about 20 years late to the party. The movie is far more fascinating in a study in how self-help business speak and philosophies are a breeding ground for sociopaths. Jake Gyllenhall's performance nails just how empty of a shell he is, and I love the relationship with his one employee.
It's inches from being an all-time classic. But alas, it focuses on the wrong part of the character.
