I like him as an actor, but go and see his current film "Blaze" and see how he knows jack shite when it comes to making a film.

You mean the movie that has a 100% critics score, 90% audience score on rotten tomatoes and an 86% audience score on google.

I don't know anything about this movie and I may not like it, but to say he doesn't know anything about movies is silly.

It's like saying no action movie can be a great movie

He's not saying that at all. Just these kind of movies:

"It still involves people in tights with metal coming out of their hands"

Superhero movies are in a category of their own. I've enjoyed a few of them, but don't get the fascination with them. They kind of remind me of wrestling, because of the costumes they wear.

By "great movie", he means movies that will stand the test of time and be remembered as classic movies for decades afterwards like the top Bresson or Bergman movies. He's right. I don't see any of these superhero movies being in that class except for The Dark Knight.

Dude that's exactly what he's doing; he's comparing superhero movies to Ingmar Bergman

Then he should use that terminology instead of you trying to explain what you think he meant

A great story is a great story.

If a story has well-developed characters/protagonist/antagonist/premise/character arch/conflict then including a fantastical element like people in tights with metal coming out of their hands shouldn't disqualify it.

That's like saying Lord of the Rings can't be a great movie because it's still a movie about a magical wizard and hairy-footed hobbits with an enchanted ring.

I would imagine people were saying the same thing about Westerns back in that genre's prime. When, I might add, they were churning out a lot more Westerns then they are super hero movies today.

The thing is, while there were a great many bad Westerns some of the greatest films ever made were Westerns. While there is no great shortage of mediocre or just plain bad SH flicks some of them have been great and terrific entertainment.

Ethan Hawke sounds like he's the sort to enjoy the "gay cowboys eating pudding" genre. Well... more power to him but I'll pass.

Who gives a frick. I don’t watch movies because they are art. I watch them to be entertained for a few hours.

If I want to see art, I will go to a museum.

Sure but also any genre can have great movies.

Also how many “amazing” artful movies are shite?

Idk which side The Shape of Water falls but that movie was weird as frick, and kinda dumb.

Straight up false.

There are more films and more unique films being now than ever before.

I did this in another thread this month:

Wide Releases in 1980

Wide Releases in 2016

11 Films released in July 1980....24 films in 2016.

You think the 4-5 superhero films per year have ruined film when we are producing probably at least double the films per year than we have in years past?

I get his point and I'm a huge fan of Marvel movies. I don't watch them expecting to see Citizen Kane though.

Wow. How does one even respond to such an intelligent comment?
