In a chat with The Film Stage ahead of the Lifetime Achievement Award he is being awarded at the Locarno Film Festival, Hawke discussed his feelings about the difference between a good movie and a good superhero movie.

“Now we have the problem that they tell us Logan is a great movie,” he said. “Well, it’s a great superhero movie. It still involves people in tights with metal coming out of their hands. It’s not Bresson. It’s not Bergman. But they talk about it like it is.

“I went to see Logan ‘cause everyone was like, ‘This is a great movie’ and I was like, ‘Really? No, this is a fine superhero movie.’ There’s a difference, but big business doesn’t think there’s a difference. Big business wants you to think that this is a great film because they wanna make money off of it.”

I mean it may come off a little snobby but he’s probably not wrong.

"Great movie" is way too nonspecific for Hawke to make this argument IMO

It's like saying no action movie can be a great movie

Don't disagree. These superhero movies are fine for what they are as simple entertainment, but they're rarely more than that.

I am not that impressed by Ethan's performance in Training Day...doesn't mean I still don't enjoy the movie

also Boyhood sucked. It wasn't a good movie by any standard.

Just a guess. He was supposedly considered for Dr Strange though.

This is the correct answer. He's being pretty snobby.

God, the worst part about superhero movies to me is when I get conned into seeing them in theaters.

Most middling movies at least have the decency to end when the credits roll. These comic films seem to view the credits as a mere breather before the cringiest moments appear on screen.

"Alright, credits! Movie's over! Two hours and 40 minutes...jesus that was long..my arse is numb...let's go home...or to a bar....or anywhere"

"What do you mean? You think we can leave now? The best parts are after the credits!"

"FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCKKK MEEEEEEEE!!!"

Ehh, that really depends on what your definition of a great movie is.

He likes slow depressing foreign films. He mentions Ingmar Berman and Robert Besson who I'm sure a large portion of this board would be bored to tears with.

His problem is he views only certain kinds of art as capable of being great.

This is the equivalent of a classical musician saying "meh, good for a rock band but not real music" when asked what they think of bands like Led Zeppelin or The Beatles.

He's mad because he's never been invited to be in one...

Not true, he was one of Nolans top choices for Harvey Dent. I believe Damon was the top choice, then Hawke.

Yep, I agree. And there is nothing wrong with this.

How do you keep getting conned into going to see movies you don't like? Sounds like a personal problem tbh
