It’s not in and of itself a terrible episode, but what does it do?

It’s a filler episode when we don’t have that much time left

That's it. Perfect with the first response. All OP did was ask people why they thought it sucked, and the tards get triggered.

Some people can't do without action for a couple episodes. We're about to get 82 minutes straight of pure action directed by the man who did BotB and Hardhome

All these reunions are set up for a total massacre. Next week is going to hit us hard

filler

People really need to learn what this means.

Jamie finally arrived at Winterfell and Knighted Briene

Arya and Gendry hooked up leaving the door for a possible Stark/Baratheon child

Theon and Sansa reunited and Theon told Dany about a possible place to retreat

Jon told Dany about his true paratenge

Lots of major foreshadowing for possible deaths

Also setting up for shite to go horribly wrong in the Crypts

The episode wasn't bad, but with only 6 episodes in this entire season and left in the show period, people were expecting there to be a lot of major plot movement in almost every episode. Having the first two episodes dedicated almost entirely to slower 'setup' is a let down, especially with only 4 episodes left and there seems to be A LOT to cover in them.

Means nothing overall besides some character development that isn’t relevant or worthwhile

quote:

NO TIME FOR THIS! 4 episodes left.

quote:

Theon and Sansa reunited and Theon told Dany about a possible place to retreat

She can fly and has an entire CONTINENT she can retreat to.

quote:

Jon told Dany about his true paratenge

3 minutes out of 60

Foreshadowing 1 episode before it happens is filler.

Again foreshadowing l1 episode before something happens is barely effective.

Who really cares if Briene is a knight or not. It means nothing.

no real issue here just wish it was done in a better way.

quote:

Theon and Sansa reunited and Theon told Dany about a possible place to retreat

There are multiple places to retreat like the Eyrie or Walder Freys crossing. If they lose this fight realistically the 7 kingdoms are fricked. All the Warriors/animals they lost in the fight would join the Night King and the army would just become more massive and more deadly.

quote:

Jon told Dany about his true paratenge

Terrible timing on Jon telling Dany that right before the huge battle.

quote:

Also setting up for shite to go horribly wrong in the Crypts

Pretty much. I think the characters are smarter than to put the people down with a lot of dead people when they are fighting enemies that raise the dead.

I agree it's not filler, but I was not a fan of all the fanfiction writing.

I don't think the crypt angle is going to come into play.

The people down there have all been dead quite a long time, they are surely just skeletons at this point.

The wights we've seen thus far all had meat on their bones to various degrees. I know it's all magic and shite, but they presumably still need the muscles and tendons to move their bodies around.

We haven't seen any straight up skeletons walking around yet. How would a skeleton even see? I know, I know, magic, but still.

Yeah but not like the Iron Islands since there's an army there and the army of the dead can't cross water

So why exactly did this GOT episode “suck”

It didn’t suck, but they could have given us some action. I feel like the entire series has dragged on and on and on and all 8 seasons are coming down to one single episode. It was always going to be this way...I’ve been saying it for years so I’m not surprised, but being right in this scenario is a bit disappointing.

But, I’m sure it’s going to be a badass episode. I saw where they said it’s going to be longer than the battle of helms deep in two towers. Which is one of my favorite all time scenes in any movie.

It was kind of a wasted episode. The stuff that happened, Arya/Gendry hookup, knighting, Arya’s weapon, Jon’s revelation to Dani, etc., really only took up about ten minutes. The rest of the show was pretty irrelevant or just wasting time.

That being said, I think it was meant to set the mood that they you don’t just travel to a castle and reunite and fight a war. There’s a lot of anticipation and reflection. I kinda see this episode as a build up episode. That being said, it was a ton of un-needed build up. We’ve been building up for five years now. (Longer if you read the stupid books).

I thought it was fairly good - much needed characterization from lost interpersonal relationships. You can’t have great drama (and this show is about that - with dragons, magic, and much death mixed in) without having these things. They are trying not to cheapen the entire series by giving us more than just a few seconds of dialogue - and I don’t blame them.

The haters just like looking at cool CGI effects versus having to pay attention to people talking.

I just want decent writing.

How did Ghost get back and reunite with Jon? Who knows. But we get extra minutes of shooting the shite around the fire.

Etc.

i don't care about seeing action and i'd be happy if the battle with the dead army was resolved offscreen if it meant better episodes

and

that was one of the worst episodes in GOT history

these last 2 seasons are severely hurting the legacy of this show

Because the are moving too fast

GOT desperately needed a 9th season for pacing this story out.

I liked the episode and felt like it was a mashup of goodbyes. Almost none of them believe they'll survive this.

Jaime knighting Brienne was fine for me. I think it was his way of paying her back for defending him but I also believe he truly respects her. She's basically the knight he never was.

Sansa asking Dany about the North before the battle was EXTRA SHITTY timing. Only last season did Tryion already start mentioning an heir. Add that with Jon telling her the truth about who he is and I think she's about ready to burn everyone.

There were straight up skeletons in the episode where Bran and crew finally make it to the tree north of the wall.

or just better budgeting to give 2 full seasons

lots of wasteful CGI truncated the budgets for everything else

for example, that CGI bear was a couple million. each season gets approximately $100M so about $10M/episode. so they used approximately 1/3 of an edpisode's budget to include the bear.

the huge scene with the ice dragon blowing down the wall was also overly done and not. want to have another episode? just set a shot of rubble (we don't know what it is). then pull a Terminator and have the dead horse step (which is how they introduce the walkers, typically). scroll up and you see the walker rider command the army forward (like after the Fist of the First men battle) and continue scrolling up to the NK on the dead dragon with the wall smoldering and smoking.

there, i just used a little creativity (and set a better scene than what we got) and we have about half a budget for another episode

Those scenes were some of the worst in series history. Badly written, and for the most part, a distraction.

and i just wrote a long post about how they need a lot less CGI

...after claiming that was one of the worst episodes ever
