Sounds like a good combination, though this article writer doesn't seem to think much of the original 1987 movie. I've always loved it, but it deviates heavily from the book.

Stephen King’s The Running Man was published in 1982 under King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman. The Running Man is set in a dystopian United States in the year 2025, when the country’s economy is in ruins and violence is on the rise around the world. Ben Richards, an impoverished 28-year-old in Co-Op City whose daughter is ill and his wife has resorted to prostitution to win some money, turns to Games Network in a desperate attempt to get some money. Richards is then selected to appear on the reality show The Running Man, where contestants can go anywhere in the world but are being chased, and anyone who kills them gets a huge bounty.

The Running Man was a moderate box office success and got mixed to negative reviews, with King sharing in his book On Writing that the movie made Richards less relatable. Still, The Running Man was adapted into a video game in 1989, and in 2022, Schwarzenegger revealed that a sequel was in development, separate from Wright’s remake.

My fantasy casting for a remake of this has always been Steve Harvey as the host.

The original was really enjoyable movie, but it kind of got sharing 1987 with Robocop, which did a much better job with an extremely similar palette

The actual book was great and I'd watch a movie that follows it. The original movie was different than the book; I liked it but it was more of a caricature.

Stephen King’s The Long Walk needs to be done.

But what about Mick Fleetwood?

Edgar Wright = As meh as it gets.

quote:That's actually not a bad idea, but I'm not sure he'd be able to act well enough to be the big baddie. Drew Carey is the only other one I can think of, if they chose to go that route. He could end up being a good bad guy. Maybe they could go with a Psycho Blossom?

I've never read the original novel but it sounds more like the Hunger Games.

I’m gonna throw out one more name to replace Richard Dawson….Pat Sajak.
I think Drew Carey and Steve Harvey would make excellent choices. You might even stretch and put Wayne Brady in there. The obvious thing is, like Dawson, they have to play this exactly like they were hosting a game show.
I’m not sure if the fact the character is “willingly” albeit in desperation going on the game show will make it better or worse.

Aside from the stunt casting of Steve Harvey being another Family Feud host, I think he can the mean assholes vibes that Richard Dawson had. I don't think Drew Carey or Pat Saban could pull that off.

Just go get Ellen have her be herself since she was apparently a raging mega prick behind the scenes of her show.

I honestly don’t know that casting Harvey would be any more of a stunt than
casting Dawson in the original….I recognize that Dawson had been a more versatile actor before hosting FF, but I think the reason he got the gig was mostly because the public knew him as such.

Ole Bachman aka King wasn’t that far off in his future look at the 2025 world society and finance.

Drew can totally play that prick role. I think he'd be a great choice.
I loved both the short story and the movie (despite and because of their differences) and I'm an Edgar Wright fan, so sign me all the way up for this. Seems like it can't miss for me.
Also, whoever mentioned The Long Walk needing a screen adaptation gets a co-sign from me.
