The fire wiped them out? Wouldn't insurance have paid?

Hurricanes caused insurance companies in Montana to cancel coverage for everybody.
Premise is silly but ya just gotta roll with it.

Why did Rip stay back and how did he survive the wildfire that wiped everything out? I was a fan of Yellowstone and I’m sure I’ll be a fan of Dutton Ranch just some things don’t add up

He went to save the cattle before the fire got to them. He cut the fence and let them out. The fire took over everything. He was heading out then saw a baby calf and went save it. He was on a horse and just got away from the fire but was pretty beat up by the time beth found him.

If you like Yellowstone you will love the first 2 episodes of Dutton Ranch.

Dana from The Goldbergs grew up.

For being the same age (she might be younger) she did the girls maturing faster than boys thing and matured so much faster than Adam on the show. It made sense to go in a different direction regardless of if her part was actually downsized for any other reason.

Interesting to see Beth and Rip on the other side of things. They are no longer rich and powerful. And the Dutton name doesn't mean shite in Texas.

They did borrow a little bit of writing from Yellowstone. Rip touched the gun that was used to kill that guy. So, I'm guessing that will come up later. Like the Kayce barrel swap thing.

Sheridan sure does love his boss bitches.

The more subdued Beth is nice. But, I have a feeling that won't last.

In the first 2 episodes they managed to piss off the the rich lady, her psycho son and the rodeo star.

I like that Rip continued the tradition of hiring cowboys straight out of prison.

Glad they went back and explained how they ended up in Texas. Although the fact that it was Walker who told Rip about the available ranch was kinda weird.

Looks like they are starting to make at least a few allies. The Vet, The new cowboy, most likely the dead guy's wife and they guy who got beat with the branding iron.

This is probably a dumb question, but can you watch Dutton Ranch without ever having watched Yellowstone? I don't have it in me to rewatch that series, kinda think I know the broad strokes through osmosis and know basically how Yellowstone ended.

I think you probably can. So far, the only context you'd be missing is how Carter came to be part of the family and Beth/Rip's personality, although as others have said, they're a little toned down so far. There may be some context down the road, but as long as you generally know the story line, it's probably ok.

Watched the first two episodes last night. Observations...

Love Ed Harris' character. He's a real anchor for the series.
You can see the set up between Juan Pablo Raba's character, Joaquin, and Rip. Joaquin is overmatched. The name "Joaquin Jackson" comes from a very famous and late Texas ranger that has several books about him.
I love Annette Bening, but this is going to be a hard role for her to pull off. She was so good in Open Range and fit that role perfectly. This one, maybe not so much.
I see Rip is carrying on the tradition of hiring people straight out of prison like Dutton. I wonder when the branding starts.

You buy a 30 million dollar ranch and have zero insurance. .. Do not think about Tayor Sharodon writing too much...

So why not just rebuild, does not make sense, grass grows after fires. Cows do not eat trees.

Looks like a Gateway, most are north of $100,000.
Big difference between Dutton & Marshalls writing.
