Does anyone really think Star Wars is better than The Lord of the Rings?

I mean the original Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back are great, but I think Return of the Jedi is much worse than than those two save for the Throne Room scenes. The Lord of the Rings though is not only consistently excellent, but it gets better when it’s expanded. With the extended editions, it’s a 13 hour massive trilogy that is basically perfect. Yes Han, Leila, and Luke are great, but none of them are as good of characters as Gollum, Gandalf, or Sam. The stakes are also much higher in Lord of the Rings than Star Wars, although admittedly Darth Vader is a more terrifying villain than anyone in Lord of the Rings (at least until RotJ).

Even if you want to bring up the Hobbit Trilogy and the prequel/sequel trilogy, it’s still better. Jackson got all the scenes in the Hobbit he needed to get right and just halfassed the other scenes due to a tight production schedule. I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that Star Wars is the most overrated franchise of all time, while I think Lord of the Rings acclaim is greatly deserved.

Your thoughts?

It’s more palatable to the masses that’s for sure. I love both. Definitely was always into Star Wars more than LOTR but I don’t have anything about LOTR I don’t like. I enjoy constantly learning new things about it and respect it supremely. But dammit Star Wars is Star Wars and that’s what I grew up playing with with my friends. Their angle of using it to sell merchandise and build the brand up with that worked

LOTR is better quality. Star wars could have been so much better if it wasn't commercialized into the ground. Disney will never make star wars the right way because of that.

Almost everything that becomes popular in our culture goes to shite.

We should all be on high alert for this Amazon series for LOTR.

I’ll never forget watching Fellowship of the Ring for the first time. I had already read the Hobbit because my parents forced me to read it a year before the trilogy came out. Like most things I didn’t like when I was 10, I found the Hobbit to be gay while barely understanding that term. So while I knew who Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin, and Gollum were walking into the theater, the opening blew me away and was mesmerized from that moment forward. I also didn’t know Lord of the Rings was a trilogy and thought it was simply a sequel to the Hobbit. I thought when Frodo was loading up into that canoe that Mount Doom was across the river... and it just ended. I was pissed for about 2 seconds and then realized there was much more to come. Very special film memory.

Got to give it to Fellowship. Can’t think of many more scenes of concentrated joy especially if you grew up in a similar environment (minus the Hobbit holes): Gandalf arriving to the Shire

The Hobbit never needed to be a frickin' trilogy.

All said, what made the original Star Wars so entertaining is how simple it was. Fast paced, good vs evil, easy to follow flashy eye catching space gadgets & pure munching fun.

But LOTR and Tolkien's Middle Earth is so full of history and intricate backstory , it stands above Star Wars.

It's not just better, it's FAR better.

We'll never agree on this. For me, fellowship isn't in the same stratosphere as ESB. But I respect your choice.

It probably needed to be as long as Return of the King, and there are some fantastic fan edits that make it such. They’re basically perfect. The only part you’d be confused about is why Smaug is covered in molten gold when he busts out of the Lonely Mountain. I highly encourage you to find one, since if that edit was the film it would have also been nominated for Best Picture.

I never got why Jackson felt the need to include the worms from DUNE in the Battle of the 5 Armies, then never used them again.

What the holy frick was that?

Blame the executives for it. And again they aren’t in the fan edits.

The problem is as good as the first act is of Return of the Jedi, it’s ultimately pointless.

LotR makes Star Wars look like a student film.

I love the Lord of the Rings movies. I hate Star Wars movies.

No. Closest would be thinking it’s an apples to oranges comparison. But in a forced head to head, it’s not even close.

Close to my exact experience but mine was more underrated going into it. I was huge into D&D as a kid but didn’t care for the Tolkien world as it didn’t follow the same “rules”. Didn’t bother seeing it in theaters, w

Circa 2001 in grad school was at a friends house doing laundry and saw he had the dvd and I had time to kill...20 minutes later I’m like “WTF, why the hell didn’t I watch this sooner??”

When Two Towers came out I was brickshitting.
