I would also add X-Men DOFP. The quicksilver scene is one of the goat scenes in the comic book genre.

I think it’s Infinity War. The amount of setup it took to get there. The number of characters juggled, most of whom had been featured in their own franchises. If the script and direction were not flawless, it would have been a mess. This film had no business working. And not only did it work but it was amazing. The gut punch at the end may never be topped.

For non Superhero comic book films, it’s Ghost World and American Splendor 1A and 1B.

Doesn't get enough credit for how good it is.

Logan, X2, DoFP are all incredible.

GOAT comic book movie is Spider-Man 2. Rewatched and confirmed.

Infinity War/Endgame only work if you saw the 20 or so films that preceded them in the franchise. It assumes you already know who these characters are, where they came from, and what they've been through. A first time visitor to the MCU would have been absolutely lost from the opening scene of Infinity War to the closing credits of Endgame.

The great thing about The Dark Knight is, while it is a direct sequel to Batman Begins, you don't need to have watched the first film to understand what's going on in the second. There are definitely scenes that allude to events that took place in that first movie, but the plot remains coherent for first time visitors to the franchise.

Superman (1978) - and it isn't particularly close.

You're making a common mistake - Ledger's performance as The Joker overshadows everything else about the movie. The performance is legendary, for sure.

That’s its biggest weakness for sure. Still doesn’t take away from the absolute magnitude of an accomplishment that film is and it’s deserved status.

I disagree here. One of the things that hurts the film is the change in casting for Rachel. Her death is impactful because of all the things set up in Batman Begins about the relationship between her and Bruce. The casting change hurts this but it’s absolutely essential to have seen the background and development of that relationship in the first film to get the full weight of her death in the second.

Agreed. IW was an incredible achievement. It deserves it's accolades.

This was a weakness, IMO. We knew they were all coming back so that snap did nothing for me

I love The Dark Knight, but I’ve found Infinity War and Winter Soldier more fun to rewatch.

Not sure which one I would consider the GOAT, but I would think being able to go back to it and enjoy it over and over again helps.

Superman (1978) and Batman (1989) strike me as being more significant films.

Is this the thread where all these years later everyone pretends Dark Knight is overrated?

It’s great, and Batman Begins is even better.
