I feel like being lost in the story isn't a legit excuse. There was nothing even remotely confusing about that movie.

Ok.
I mean, crossover when not familiar with something prior is going to cause confusion.
If you think it’s someone’s fault for not familiarizing themselves with prior material, I can understand that. But it doesn’t mean it’s not legitimate to not understand everything. It just means you need to understand that about going into every Marvel movie. This is for the random movie goer. They may not be aware they need to watch a TV show prior.
If you did not see WandaVision, there is a lot of villain back story you are going to be unfamiliar with. Thereby limiting her as a developed villain. Even more so if you’re familiar with her from other movies but are unaware of her show.
So, you can call them stupid for not wanting to watch a TV show if you would like. But if they don’t watch the show, there’s an element missing for them. Being “lost” may be a strong description. But there are definitely elements missing for development.

They have a multiverse and Deadpool. Can you imagine the possibilities with those two together?
Now I want The Office with Deadpool. And he goes to work in his costume every day. Maybe he ends up being Human Resources replacing Toby. Casually threatens to kill people if they don’t use the correct pronouns

Gotta agree with you, the story wasn’t too difficult to follow

The question is not really whether someone is “lost” with the story overall.
It’s if there’s missing elements or lack of development. If you did not see WandaVision, there are missing elements. It’s factual.
You can say those elements are meaningless if you would like. You can say it’s the person’s fault for not watching the show. But you can’t say there’s no missing elements.

We are like 30 properties into the MCU
You’re going to have to know what happened prior to any film to know what’s going on

Correct.
And it’s something that has worked well for them in movies.
This was the first time they’ve done it this significantly with a TV show. And I agree it’s understandable for them to try this. Because it sells their TV shows. But it’s new and it’s a risk. Not everyone is going to be a fan of it. Some people do not even know the existence of WandaVision. This is a BIG summer blockbuster movie. This is a new experiment.

Watched it Saturday.
First let me say that Scarlet Witch is my favorite Avenger and IMO, WandaVision is by far the best MCU show that has come out. I loved the first Dr. Strange movie as well. That being said... this was terrible. I mean so bad.
It's like they decided to make a Marvel Conjuring movie. Plus Frankenstein. And make it as cheesy as possible. This is definitely bottom tier MCU. It was already really bad but when they went The Walking Dead Dr Strange, it just put it over the edge.
The Multiverse hurts the story. With the ending of Loki they basically set it up as "We can do whatever we want with timelines and it doesn't have to make sense and nobody can question it because... Multiverse!" It just gives a writer a very easy excuse for sloppy writing.
Still love Wanda, and her character is such a badass, but even that and her hotness couldn't help this from being a turd.

I’m seeing a recurring theme that people do not like the multiverse.
Seems like it could have been a cool standalone rated R Raimi Dr Strange movie (at least for those who like that kind of thing), and instead they had to make it so world building. It’s a bummer.

More people enjoy the multiverse than don’t
This is a much better option than rebooting everything and starting over
The multiverse allows for everything everyone wants.
The storytelling possibilities are infinite

I think it’s not just people not liking the multiverse. I think it’s also people who don’t like how they’re doing the multiverse.
Personally I don’t care about the multiverse. I just want a rated R Raimi Dr. Strange 3. Go all out. Because I think his character is perfect for that. Maybe this movie will give us a new Evil Dead movie. Or get Raimi back into doing action/comedy/horror. I honestly don’t know why him and Peter Jackson don’t do more stuff like that.

That doesn't seem true
The essence of storytelling is character development and you ruin that part with constant resets and inconsistencies between multiverse characters.
Strange and Wanda are kinda suffering from this already.

I'm not so convinced of this. A rock killed a Captain Marvel in this movie.

Finally saw it this past weekend.
It was fun movie. The fight scene with the music was a highlight for me. I enjoyed all of the illuminati stuff, just wish it was more. Thought the 2nd act dragged too much, especially when they got to the illuminati universe and were walking and talking.

Oh cool. Wish Raimi was directing. Hopefully he has some creative control of some kind.

Isn't there a scarlet witch movie planned?
I'd watch it. Elizabeth Olsen is a very underrated actress and she's fantastic as Wanda. In this movie we finally got to see how powerful Wanda really is. Her attack on Kamar Taj was awesome. The sorcerers never stood a chance.
