I don't know what to say to Gamecock since he seems to think Brokeback Mountain was not a big movie. The only thing that counts in his world are movies that hit multiple triple digits in gross. I suspect he also assumes that because he or his immediate family and friends aren't aware of an actor, that the rest of the country is in the same boat.

The Dark Knight was his first big role in a Big blockbuster. His name was everywhere when the movie came out (some of it had to do with his death, but most of it was because of his performance).

Still wrong dude. You don't have to be THE STAR of a blockbuster to be well known. And like it or not, Brokeback Mountain was a blockbuster. Maybe not the summer action packed blockbuster you think of when you say the word, but it was a very well promoted movie that got a ton of attention. People knew who Ledger and Gyllenhal were, if they didn't know before.

Keep in mind he did several other movies that, despite possibly not being in your personal favorites, people did watch them and it starts adding up. I saw 10 Things I Hate About You while I was in HS, Lords of Dogtown, The Four Feathers, Ned Kelly, and The Brothers Grimm. I'm plenty of people caught at least one of those and knew who he was before his final role.

Brokeback Mountain's theatrical run lasted for 133 days and grossed $83,043,761 in North America and $95,000,000 abroad, adding up to a worldwide gross of more than $178 million. It is the top-grossing release of Focus Features, ranks fifth among the highest-grossing westerns (since 1979) and eighth among the highest-grossing romantic dramas (1980–Present).

Yeah, not a big hit at all.

What exactly was so incoherent about it? It was pretty straightforward to me.

Here's a short list: LINK

I never said it was good just because it made a lot of money. I look at movies as entertainment not art.

Then you have no business posting with us if you don't think film is art. This could be the worst post in the history of this board. And aren't you the guy who thinks you can't make a well developed character within a film?

I just hate people who go in expecting one thing (foolishly) and then come out saying it was horrible when it wasn't what they expected.

I expect to see the fundamentals of filmmaking 101 when I'm watching a film. Transformers 2 doesn't follow them and fails miserably.

The first SAW film grossed $23 million MORE than Brokeback Mountain at theaters. I guess to you guys that makes it a huge movie and Cary Elwes a huge star as well.

You called me retarded and dropped two 's for absurdly thinking that *gasp* 10-15 percent of America knew who Heath Ledger was before TDK.
But no, you weren't saying that by any means.

That's not even Domestic blockbusters status.

That means that they heard of it. How many Baptist churches do you think went around and threatened their congregation if they went to see it? I think homophobia in America made the gross go way down. People heard of it and people openly despised it from the concept.

And? How many people do you think really care THAT MUCH about who merely gets nominated?

In the very least, at least 40 million people.f

Nielsen numbers aren't the most accurate thing out there. Even if they were, do you think those people remembered who was nominated for best actor? Hell of your head do you remember who all was nominated for best actor in say... 2006? 2007? I don't (not that I give a damn about The Oscars anyways).

quote:

No I was not. The guy said the movie was a colossal fail. Making a shitton of money = not a colossal fail. He may not like the movie but to say it was a colossal fail is retarded.

No, because they didn't. It's not like it was the Super Bowl where the winner is touted for months afterwards.

The Dark Knight was his first big role in a Big blockbuster. His name was everywhere when the movie came out (some of it had to do with his death, but most of it was because of his performance).

Look at it this way: Leonardo DiCaprio was in several movies before Titanic and some people knew him. However his name really didn't get big until Titanic was released. The Dark Knight was to Heath much like Titanic was to Leo.

Hearing of a movie and then seeing it and knowing who is in it are separate things guy. I've heard of several movies that I never cared about nor knew who starred in them.

So you think all 40 million people who allegedly watch The Oscars not only watch the ENTIRE show, but also have a vested interest in the nominees and will also retain the list of nominees for the awards in their head?

I'm going to test that theory right now:

Being that you seem to care about the Oscars and such it would seem to me that you would know of not only the winners but the nominees.

So, without looking it up, who were in the winners and nominees for the following awards in 2005, 2006, and 2007:

Best Motion Picture
Best Leading Actor
Best Leading Actress
Best Supporting Actor
Best Supporting Actress
Best Director

You are a straight dumbass if you are dumb enough to believe that 30-45 million Americans knew who Heath Ledger was before 2008. You really think that just because he was in a gay cowboy movie that everyone knew who he was? Really? REALLY? You can't be that damn stupid.

You hold the dumbest view on the planet that film isn't art to where you have no business posting on a film board talking down to us like a condescending prick like you always are. And he's right by the way.

I thought T2 was good. I mean the basis of these movies are fighting robots. Just make it entertaining. I'm not looking for a Shawshank Redemption-type movie. I've liked both movies so far.
