S1E2 recorded the lowest number of U.S. viewers at 2.20 million.

Avg viewers in S7 was 10.26 million viewers

S8E1 through S8E5 viewers was about 10-12 million

S8E6? 13.6 million

Moral of the story is that being meme-i-fied to hell and back for being bad is better for the bottom line than being good.

Otherwise, there wouldn’t be a rush of new viewers for the last and final episode or else they’d be more interested in avoiding spoilers.

Having a story where anything can happen and people not wanting that to get spoiled is good, not being bad. This isn’t good for DVD (and all the other media) sales and rewatching the series.

yep, they might have got the ratings then, but they lost a lot of future DVD sales and syndication interest

Very short-sighted take. The spin offs in production will suffer from the way they wrapped up GoT.

Subscriptions is what HBO is after, not ratings. I’m not sure that further universe development will move the needle now like it would have 2 seasons ago.

It depends. If million rush out to see the Star Wars films, then probably. I'll protest by canceling HBO and ignoring the Confederate project.

Every television show in the world would love to have the “problems” that GOT had in its final season.

One can hate Paul Finebaum, but he’s won if you got to the point of hating him.

Spot On. Also, people won't be rushing out to purchase those special edition GOT boxed set with the extra content at the same level had a respectable 8th season with acceptable finale been provided. Not to mention the merchandising hit I'm guessing they will take.

GOT is still going to be a cash-cow for years to come. They just left some money on the table

I feel like if people went back and watched the old seasons so that they were fresh on their minds, season 8 wouldn't have been "horrible" etc.

My son binged GOT over 2 weeks to be caught up for the last episode and pulled it off.

He did not have any significant issues with this season or how the series ended (does admit it was rushed).

Are HBO series syndicated anywhere? If so, I haven't seen it.

The big numbers are easy to explain. Early on, the show looked like a giant geek fest and normal people didn't want to pay to tune in to watch a bunch of fairy fricking, dragon breathing, zombie shite, even if that was a horrible misrepresentation of what the show was. Then word got out that it was one of the best shows of all time and people started to tune in. Then the show was announced to be wrapping up and people decided to binge the shite out of it to catch up and see it all happen in time for the finale. I don't think it has anything to do with the show falling off a cliff at the end.
